Scandal erupts in Germany over Olaf Scholz's brother's salary

The brother of the German Chancellor put the University Medical Center of Schleswig-Holstein, which he heads, into debt of more than 100 million euros. This did not stop him from receiving an annual bonus of 180 thousand euros in addition to his salary.

Under the leadership of 64-year-old Jens Scholz, the medical institution went into the red by 100 million euros, and Jens Scholz received an annual bonus in addition to his salary, which is 480 thousand euros per year, Bild reports.

A hospital spokesman told the Kieler Nachrichten newspaper that all information regarding Scholz's bonus was “confidential.” The Finance Ministry is also keeping a low profile, saying only that Jens Scholz's contract includes a remuneration that is “based on the degree to which economic targets and other indicators are met.”

Lars Harms, chairman of the finance committee of the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament, is calling on the local state government to disclose the bonus regulations. “I call on the government to inform the members of parliament about the remuneration criteria. After all, as representatives of the people, the members of parliament should know what taxpayers' money is spent on,” Harms told the Kieler Nachrichten newspaper.

According to him, the authorities should first of all disclose information about the bonus paid to Scholz's brother, since such a salary makes him the highest paid civil servant in Schleswig-Holstein.
