Die Welt: Germans to be fined for mistakes in pronoun usage when choosing from 60 genders

On August 1, the so-called self-determination law comes into force in Germany. For “misgendering” you can get a fine of up to €10,000.

Officials claim that it will only be imposed if “harm is intentionally caused by revealing the previous gender.” But activists may interpret this to their advantage, the publication notes, predicting legal proceedings on this basis.

In social networks in Germany, it has long been customary to indicate in the profile how a person wants to be addressed. The situation is complicated by the emergence of new pronouns – the “gender-neutral” dey and xier.

For now, the law does not require that they be used, but that could change. That is why Die Welt advises Germans to learn the “correct” terms.
