The Pirates of the Caribbean star fell victim to a shark


While surfing in Hawaii, Hollywood actor Tamayo Perry, known for his role in the film Pirates of the Caribbean, was attacked by a shark. The 49-year-old actor died Sunday afternoon, Honolulu emergency officials confirmed at a news conference.

Rescuers were called to Malaekahana Beach around 13:00 local time, the actor, who was also a lifeguard, was taken to shore on a jet ski, but it was no longer possible to help him.

Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety Commissioner Kurt Lager noted in his condolences to the actor's family and loved ones that Perry was a lifeguard who was loved by everyone:

“Tamayo’s personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else even more.”

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi called Perry's death a tragic loss:

“Tamayo was a legendary waterman and was highly respected, [он] grew up right here and has been a wonderful member of our ocean safety team.”

Perry starred in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth film in the franchise, as well as the TV series Lost, Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Crush.

Perry was born in 1975. I have been surfing since I was 12 years old. Tamayo won the prestigious Pipeline Masters tournament and was considered one of the most outstanding surfers. In 2016, he and his wife Emilia wrote the Oahu Guide to Surfing.

More than 40 species of sharks live in the Hawaiian Islands. The most common are tiger, reef, sand, hammerhead and Galapagos sharks. According to the American magazine American Surf, between 1980 and 2023, 176 shark attacks were recorded off the coast of Hawaii. In the first 20 years of observation, approximately 1.7 attacks per year were recorded. Since 2020, this figure has increased to 5.8 annual incidents.
