From July 1, consumers will face sharp increase in prices for bottled products.

As a result of the strong price pressure experienced by consumers over the past two years, they will have to prepare for the fact that, according to a decree of the Ministry of Development, 500 ml bottled water will cost 0.60 euros, compared to 0.50 today.

Other drinks sold in aluminum, glass and plastic packaging are also included in this regulation

This fact was drawn to the attention of the President of the organization Consumer Workers of Greece, Apostolos Raptopoulos, who noted that after the cancellation of the permanent price reduction measure, prices began to increase for all products that participated in this measure. “From July 1, there will be an increase in prices of up to 20% for water, soft drinks, juices and beer,” – he said.

The reason for these changes was the introduction of the Duty Drawback Scheme (DRS) in Greece, which led to higher food prices due to higher prices for plastic, aluminum and glass bottles. Of course, the same official bulletin that announced the upcoming price increase stipulates that the price increase will be offset by a voucher for returning plastic containers to the store.

Which packaging will be more expensive?

The new regulation, which will lead to higher prices, will apply to the following types of single-use packaging:

• Aluminum up to 1 liter
• Glass up to 1.3 liters
• Plastic up to 3 liters.

The law covers beer, wine, water, soft drinks, juices, instant drinks and milk.

The price increase is expected to be between 10 and 15 euro cents compared to today's prices. Guaranteed price compensation is set at €0.10 for each return of aluminum, glass and plastic packaging up to half a liter and €0.15 for each return of aluminum, glass and plastic packaging over half a liter and up to the maximum package size allowed under the scheme.

These amounts will be paid by the consumer in advance, as they will be included in the price, and will be returned to him upon return of the package.

Money will be refunded using “reward voucher”, and the obligation to return the packaging will apply regardless of whether it was sold at the same or another retail store. The authors of the resolution refer to the fact that consumers will be more active in collecting packaging and handing it over to collection points, but everyone understands perfectly well that for this purpose in Greece there is neither a developed infrastructure nor a desire among the population to collect cans and bottles.

However, everything is changing and perhaps the residents of Greece, given their constantly falling standard of living, will begin to more actively collect recyclable materials.
