Attack on the Prime Minister of Denmark


Mette Frederiksen, the prime minister of Denmark, was taken to hospital with a minor neck injury after being attacked by a man in Copenhagen.

On Friday evening, June 7, in the center of Copenhagen, an unknown man attacked and punched the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen. The attacker was detained and a preventive measure was chosen for him on Saturday. A court in Copenhagen sentenced a 39-year-old Pole to 12 days in prison. According to local police, there was no political motive in the attack.

According to eyewitnesses, the newspaper writes, the prime minister looked shocked after the attack, but had no visible signs of physical injury. The incident occurred two days before Danes go to the polls for the European Parliament elections.

Police believe the attacker was under the influence of drugs and drunk during the incident, which occurred at approximately 5:50 p.m. in Kultorvet. He was so lethargic that he had to be helped out of the car.

Police believe he struck the prime minister on the right forearm with a closed fist. This constitutes violence against a person in public service, the indictment says. An aggravating circumstance is that the violence occurred because of Mette Frederiksen's statements in a public debate, according to Copenhagen police. The attacker, who is a Polish citizen and has lived in Denmark since 2019, pleads not guilty.
