Residents of Attica received an emergency message from number 112

A new emergency alert message 112 was sent shortly after noon on Saturday to the citizens of Attica regarding access to the Athens-Corinth highway, where construction work is currently underway.

Long delays were recorded on Saturday morning, with access to the Peloponnese very difficult as the old national road was also closed. The emergency message states that The Athens-Corinth national highway is experiencing long delays and citizens are advised to delay departure if their destination is the Peloponnese.

Traffic jams were recorded on Saturday morning on the Athens-Corinth highway due to demolition work on a bridge that was heavily damaged by a fire that followed the overturning of a tank on Friday evening.

Drivers said it takes about two hours from the Eleusis toll road to the bridge demolition site, 2-3 kilometers after the Corinth toll road, a distance that usually takes about 45 minutes. The passage of vehicles on the Corinth toll road is free, with open bars, but cars are practically parked on the site, and queues of cars already exceed 4-5 kilometers.

The road accident involving the overturning of a tank occurred at the intersection of the old and new national roads, in front of the isthmus, upstream from Corinth.

Damage caused to the bridge due to heat stress led to the decision to demolish it for safety reasons. In this regard, traffic on the old national road at this point has been completely stopped and it is unknown when it will be restored. In addition, as of yesterday, traffic on the new national highway has been stopped, resulting in access from Attica to the Peloponnese being carried out – until noon – through two lanes.

After the problem was identified, it was decided to open three lanes in the direction leading to Corinth. Traffic police advise citizens (who are in particularly high numbers today due to the European elections) to leave for their destination a little later, and for drivers moving in detour traffic to exercise caution, as oncoming traffic is separated by cones.
