Explosion of a fuel tanker on the Isthmus of Corinth (video)

The fire from the explosion of a fuel tanker on 75 km of the Athens-Corinth highway, in the isthmus area, was extinguished only after midnight.

At the fire station and ΕΛ.ΑΣ The alarm sounded on the evening of Friday 7 June. The fuel tanker overturned, the driver received minor injuries, and a fire broke out at the scene of the accident. According to police, the fuel tanker first overturned and then caught fire. writes CNN Greece.

Traffic on the road was stopped, explosions were heard at the scene of the accident, and firefighting forces arrived at the scene trying to cope with the raging flames. It was difficult, since the intense heat did not allow us to get closer to the burning site.

Due to the incident, traffic in front of the Kalamaki toll road increased, many vehicles remained stationary, and chaos reigned at the fire site as even emergency vehicles were unable to pass.

From approximately 10 p.m., traffic in the area was stopped in both directions. Traffic disruptions were observed on the new Athens-Corinth national highway and on the old national highway in the area of Agia Theodora.

Traffic on the Athens-Corinth national road was particularly heavy as police began to stop traffic on the Elefsina toll road, resulting in kilometers-long queues of stationary vehicles.

Movement in the traffic flow towards Corinth was carried out as follows: they left at the Loutraki intersection and entered at the Epidaurus intersection. Detours have been gradually removed on the toll roads of Kalamaki and Agii Theodorou. Meanwhile, a restriction on vehicle traffic has come into effect at the Quinettas Interchange on the road to Corinth.

Fortunately, the fire did not spread any further and the fire was extinguished after midnight, although a heavy fire brigade remained on the scene.

Work on demolishing the suspension bridge began early this morning. This is the point of the old national road, and it is unknown when traffic will be restored to it. Traffic flows along the new national road in the direction of Athens as usual, and at the exit from Loutraki, traffic is directed towards Corinth. The Old National Highway is closed in both directions.

It is noted that message 112 was sent to prohibit entry to the Olympic road from Eleusis to Corinth and from Kiato to Corinth, while the condition of the flyover (through which the old National Road passes) was checked by engineers.
