Gastroenteritis outbreak in Magnesia: “Don’t drink tap water” (video)

Dozens of cases of gastroenteritis in Magnesia: seven children are hospitalized, an 85-year-old man is in the intensive care unit.

“After receiving information from the Department of Environmental Hygiene, Sanitation and Public Health, the Directorate of Public Health and Social Protection of ΠΕΜΣ, and after the afternoon briefing that there are indications that the occurrence of cases of gastroenteritis was due to the water supply network of the districts of Rizomylos and Stefanovikiou, it is recommended Do not use tap water for internal consumption. An accredited chemical laboratory and the Department of Health carried out sampling to carry out the necessary checks. While waiting for the results and following ΕΟΔΥ's instructions, the following is recommended:

• do not use water from the water supply network for human needs (drinking, cooking) by residents of the Rizomilos and Stefanovikei areas;
• health store managers should not use tap water in the production process of food, sugary drinks, bread, etc. until its suitability has been established;
• take care of yourself, don’t drink tap water.”

In recent hours, the president of the Medical Association of Magnesia, Christos Venetis, from the Rizomylos area, has received phone calls from patients reporting symptoms of gastroenteritis. He said on a local website that the necessary tests, which have already been started by ΕΟΔΥ, need to be carried out to determine the factors that caused the gastroenteritis. He recommended doing a culture to check if it was salmonella.

However, Mr. Venetis recommended strict hygiene measures and avoiding the use of tap water until the results show that the water is suitable. In his post, the doctor calls:

“As there is an increase in cases of gastroenteritis in the area of ​​Stefanovikei and Rizomilos, and until inspections of the water supply network by ΕΟΔΥ are completed, residents of these areas are advised to:

• Use tap water only for cleaning premises.
• Do not use mains water for personal hygiene (bath, brushing teeth).
• Do not wash food intended for raw consumption with this water.

We call on the state to pay attention to the problems in the region that have multiplied after the catastrophic floods, conduct periodic preventive inspections on public health issues and provide detailed information instructions.”
