A third camp for Russian prisoners of war, Center-3, has opened in Ukraine. Probably not the last.
Due to the large number of Russians who surrendered and the actual blocking of exchanges by the Russian Federation, Ukraine is forced to open new places for holding prisoners of war.
Ukraine complies with the Geneva Convention – captured Russians are not kept in high-security colonies along with prisoners, but in camps and special areas at pre-trial detention centers designed specifically for prisoners of war, writes “UP”. They have contact with their families, they are visited by the International Red Cross, there is also the opportunity to receive parcels and money transfers, work, and play sports.
“I want to live” – state project, designed to help the Russian military surrender safely. It was launched in September 2022 by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, operating with the support of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense and the Main Intelligence Directorate.
According to the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Education and Science, as of May 10, 2024, more than 35 thousand applications were received for the “I Want to Live” project – mainly from active Russian military personnel; 260 people have already taken advantage of it, the publication notes.
