NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg wants to allow Ukraine to launch serious strikes on targets deep inside Russia.
Stoltenberg's opinion: “We provide training, supply weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, but we will not participate directly.” But Ukraine has the right to defend itself, quotes his BB.LV. And this includes striking targets inside Russia.
As the Spanish El Pais writes, the NATO Secretary General called for the ban on the use of Western weapons to strike military targets in the Russian Federation to be lifted. Direct speech from Jens Stoltenberg:
“The time has come for allies to consider whether they should lift some of the restrictions they have placed on the use of weapons transferred to Ukraine. Especially now, with heavy fighting taking place in Kharkov, near the border, denying Ukraine the ability to use these weapons against legitimate military targets on Russian soil makes it very difficult for them to defend themselves. The European allies promised a million artillery shells. We haven't seen anything like it.
The goal is to prevent this war from turning into a full-fledged war between Russia and NATO in Europe. We provide training, supply weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, but we will not directly participate from NATO territory in military operations over Ukraine or on its territory. This is completely different.
We have no intention of sending NATO ground troops into Ukraine because our goal was twofold: to support Ukraine as we do, but also to ensure that we do not escalate this into a full-blown conflict. We must remember what it is. This is Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Ukraine has the right to defend itself. And this includes striking targets inside Russia.
If the situation with cyber attacks is widespread, then we can invoke Article 5 of the charter and respond in cyber space, as well as in other areas, to protect NATO allies.”
Earlier we wrote that the German publication Der Spiegel, citing sources, reported: when Poland and the Baltic countries will send troops to Ukraine. As the article says, this will happen in the event of serious successes of the Russian military at the front.
