Large fire in the area of ​​the Souda naval base on Crete


The fire broke out shortly before 09:00 on April 23 in the area of ​​the Souda naval base. The hospital, support staff and local residents are reported to be evacuated.

It began near the village of Navstatmos Chania. The Mayor of Chania, Panagiotis Simandirakis, has decided to evacuate school buildings A' and C' of Souda Children's Station, 1st Primary and 1st Kindergarten, 2nd Primary and 2nd Kindergarten, as well as Souda Gymnasium and Lyceum out of precaution.

Earlier today, it was proposed to evacuate the Navastatmosa primary school, the naval hospital and the NCO club. In this regard, the civil defense services of the municipality of Chania are on full alert.

Strong gusts of wind intensified the flames burning a section of forest at the Nastatmos junction in Chania, at the height of the ΒΟΑΚ National Road, and firefighters had to fight ahead of time to prevent the fire from spreading to the Platani area and leading it to Megala Chorafia. Traffic on this section of the road has been stopped, as has traffic on BOAK, with traffic being diverted to Chania or Malaxa.

A 112 message was sent to Navastatmos residents to evacuate the area. In particular, the message says the following: “If you are in the Naval Station community, please move away from the area. There is a forest fire in your area. Follow the instructions of the authorities.” 70 firefighters with 5 teams of foot groups and 19 units of equipment are working to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters' efforts to extinguish the fire near the Nastatmos intersection in Chania were successful, George Tsapakos, deputy head of the civil protection service of Chania, told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency. Large mobilization of firefighters from Chania and Vrisses Apokoronas, as well as volunteer firefighters, participating in efforts to contain the fire.

Mr Tsapakos said the fire would delay the start of the second phase of the MINOAS exercise, which would have started this morning in Chania and Rethymnon.

Meanwhile, institutions, school divisions and services that will take part in all scenarios of the MINOAS exercise are awaiting appropriate orders, but, as the deputy head noted, everything will depend on the development of the fire.
