Expensiveness: Prices for milk and its derivatives continue to rise

There is no end in sight to the overpricing of table staples as consumers bleed to save money by cutting back on even essential items in their homes.

Among the products whose prices have risen sharply are milk and milk products, such as cheeses.
According to the data, prices for dairy products have increased over two years (price per 1 kg):

• Feta cheese in barrel packaging: €8.50 (Jan ’22), €12 (Jan ’23), €12.70 (Jan ’24) i.e. +49.4%. In supermarkets the price reaches €18/kg.
• Cheese like lightly salted cottage cheese (Anfutiro): €5.50 (January 22), €7.80 (January 23), €7.80 (January 24), i.e. +41.8%.
• Cheese type Myzithra(: €8.50 (Jan ’22), €11.50 (Jan ’23), €12.30 (Jan ’24), +44.7%.
• Graviera type cheese: €12 (22 January), €16.50 (23 January), €17.60 (24 January), +46.6%.
• Graviera hard cheeses in rounds: €11 (Jan ’22), €15.50 (Jan ’23), €15.80 (Jan ’24), i.e. +43.6%.
• Yogurt in clay jars 0.5 kg: €3.80 (January 22), €5 (January 23), €5 (January 24), that is +31.6%.

According to the information, the price at which whole milk leaves the manufacturer for 1 kg:

• Sheep: 1.58 – 1.65 € (until October ’23), 1.40 – 1.52 € (January ’24)
• Goat’s milk: 1 – 1.10 € (until October ’23), 0.90 – 0.94 € (January ’24).
• Cow’s milk 0.58-0.7 €.

“When the cost of producing a kilogram of sheep milk is 1.64 euros per year, and goat milk is 1.15 euros, and we sold milk until October at 1.60 euros per sheep, then processors come and, without permission, at November tariffs, buy milk and lower the price below 1.50 euros per sheep. They are destroying us, and the prices on the shelf do not fall,” Panagiotis Peveretos, President of the Greek Farmers Association, speaks to MEGA.

“The subsidies we receive have been cut by 30-50%, costs are rising, lamb mortality is high, over 30%, and we’ve reached the point where we can’t continue because not only are we not winning, we’re losing.” .

According to him, from 2021 the cost of production “soared 100%, feed and energy. Over the past 2 years, 10,000 sheep and goat farmers and 300 cow farmers have left the profession. In general, the livestock sector is going through a very difficult period, so we took to the streets with farmers.”
