From Athens to Lefkada in 3 hours

The completion date of the Aktio-Ambrakia highway, which is the final “touch” of the Ionia Odos highway, has been determined.

January 31, 2024 the last section of the Amvrakia road will be transferred to traffic, said Lefkada MP Thanasis Kavvadas, speaking about the development prospects of the prefecture. This is a 400 meter long section in the Drimos area where they were discovered archaeological finds, which caused a delay in the completion of the project.

The Aktio-Ambrakia highway, 48.5 km long, is a closed highway with 2+2 lanes per traffic and transport hubs. Let us remind you that the 14 km long section of the road from Aktio to Vonitsa has been open to traffic since 2019, and the 17 km long Amfilochia bypass road was put into operation in the summer of 2022.

The transport hub used to be congested with cars heading to the west coast and the Ionian Islands. There were often traffic jams and congestion on the road. The completion of the Amfilochia bypass saves approximately 25 minutes of travel in the main direction of the bypass from Ionia Odos to Loutraki.

Lefkada benefited from the completion of the Amvrakia road, as travel time from Athens was reduced to approximately 3 hours 20 minutes, while distances to Aktio, Preveza and Igoumenitsa were shortened.

The project is being implemented with financial support from the NSRF for 2014-2020 under the YME-PERAA operational program. This is an interim project as it was started with funds allocated in 2007-2013.

In a video published on the YouTube channel you can see the last (final) section of the Amvrakia road, a few days before its commissioning.
