Lightning broke the halo on the head of the Apostle Peter and tore off his right hand, which was holding the key, which Catholics perceive as a symbol of papal power.

On Sunday, December 17, 2023, lightning struck the statue of the Apostle Peter at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary, which is located in the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires – the former diocese of the current Pope Francis, reports catholicvote.org. For several days, information about this incident, which was leaked online by an Italian blogger, was considered dubious. But the incident was later confirmed by Catholic priest Justo Lofeudo, who published a photograph of the statue.

The publication notes that the incident occurred on the birthday of Pope Francis and the day before the publication of the declaration of Fiducia supplicans, which allows blessings for same-sex couples.

Catholic blogger Taylor Marshall added to this information the fact that lightning struck the statue of the Apostle Peter not only on the pope’s birthday and the day before the blessing of gay couples was allowed, but also in his diocese, since Francis was an archbishop for a long time and Cardinal of Buenos Aires.

Other Catholic publications also note the fact that lightning struck the statue despite the fact that it is located only a few meters above the ground, and lightning rods are located high above it, on the roof of the temple.

The statue of St. Apostle Peter is not located at the main entrance, but on the left side of the temple, on the right side of the entrance. To her left is a statue of the Apostle Paul with an iron sword in his hand, which was not damaged.
