The “end” of Stefanovicio as a helicopter base for the Greek Armed Forces. Damage exceeds 2 billion euros

Stefanovicio Army Air Force Base is being liquidated after the catastrophic flooding in Thessaly, and the cost damageapplied to materials, equipment and buildings, will significantly exceed 2 billion euros.

It is noted that the headquarters of the 1st helicopter battalion of the Greek Armed Forces was located at the base. The cost of creating a new base will be about 1 billion euros, and the destroyed helicopters will probably reach 1.5 billion euros.

Estimation of the total cost of damage 2 billion euros – this is the most “optimistic” option. If we add to this amount the 5 billion euros that will be required to restore Thessaly (to compensate for damage to property and infrastructure, as well as to maintain economic activity), then we are talking about an economic disaster worth about 7 billion euros!

Military helicopters “sank” on the Thessalian plain

According to available data, 7 Apache attack helicopters and 65 OH-58 Kiowa attack reconnaissance helicopters were completely destroyed. With the exception of the transport and attack helicopters that were stationed at Megara, the Army Air Force no longer exists.

A new base is planned to be established in Alexandria Imathia, which is suitable for operations not in the Aegean Sea, but in the Balkans, which are not a priority for Greek national interests.

The repair base, equipment and helicopters destroyed at Stefanovicio cannot be replaced because, together with the cost of land and buildings, they increase the total cost from two billion euros to two and a half billion euros.

In order to replace them, the Greek taxpayer will have to reach deep into his pocket.

The problem that needs to be addressed immediately is the question of what to do with the training of helicopter pilots. Nobody knows what will be done about it, since there are no funds to train pilots and implement a training flight program. Nobody knows when the learning process will resume.

There is also the question of how many attack helicopters that were stationed at Stefanovicio are now on alert, as some have already been taken out of service. The kind of destruction that occurred is evidenced by the words of the now pro-government journalist Aris Portosalte, who went to the area to conduct an “autopsy” on the spot. As he reported in the SKAI program, “the Stefanovikio base is now a sea bay.”

He added: “It’s like looking at the Saronic Gulf and seeing a control tower somewhere in Aegina.” Wouldn’t ΓΕΣ/ΓΕΕΘΑ contradict A. Portosalta? So he confirms the information from pronews.gr that the helicopters were recovered from a depth of five meters.
