Retail prices continue to rise, and school supplies seem to be no exception to the general rule.
According to a bookstore owner who spoke on OPEN, there has been an increase in the price of school supplies since January 2023, however, the specific increase depends on the type of product (item).
Pencils, erasers, sharpeners, rulers and triangles (geometric tools) have seen the biggest price increases due to the increase in the cost of the plastic needed to make them. A set of necessary supplies for primary school students can cost from 20 to 30-40 euros. In high school, a list of necessary supplies can cost around 50 euros.
In order to provide children with everything they need by the school year, the authorities are introducing a “School Basket”, which will include goods at reduced prices. The implementation of the social assistance program “Student / School Basket” (Καλάθι Σχολικών) will to some extent facilitate the task of parents to get their child to school. According to an ERT newscast, the School Basket is expected to include:
- Briefcases / knapsacks.
- Pencil cases.
- Notebooks.
- Pencils, pens, erasers, sharpeners, markers / felt-tip pens.
- Sets of rulers (for geometry classes).
