Refurbishment of hospitals for transplantation

To date, the field of transplantology is extremely underfunded. Additional resources can finance the modernization of the respective departments of the clinics.

The Greek Ministry of Health has embarked on an innovative idea: the bold restructuring of hospitals for transplants. As noted, the amount kidney transplant via EOPYY increased five times, from 9,000 euros to 45,000 euros. This increase is made in an attempt to cover the real cost of services provided by transplant departments. It should be noted that in other In European countries, hospital fees for a kidney transplant start at 40,000 euros and go up to 60,000 eurosO.

According to the decision published in the Government Gazette last Friday 12/05/23 and signed by Deputy Minister of Finance Theodoros Skilakakis and Deputy Minister of Health Mina Gaga, hospitals (Κλειστά Ενοποιημένα Νοσήλια, KEN) will carry out transplants at the following prices:

• for a lung transplant from 80,000 euros to 130,000 euros,
• for a heart and lung transplant from 50,400 euros to 150,000 euros,
• for a kidney transplant from 9,000 euros to 45,000 euros,
• for a liver transplant from 28,900 euros to 80,000 euros.
• heart transplantation remains at the same level – 80,000 euros.

Besides for the first time, compensation for operations on organ harvestingto cover the related operating costs of the donor hospitals.

For the removal of a kidney from a living donor, the hospital will receive compensation from EOPYY in the amount of 8,000 euros, for a partial liver removal from a living donor, 12,000 euros, and for the removal of a heart, lung, kidney, liver or pancreas from a deceased donor, 10,000 euros.

According to the law, transplantation is carried out exclusively in public institutions.

In 2022, 246 organ transplants were performed in our country, including 104 kidneys from deceased donors, 83 kidneys from living donors, 36 livers from deceased donors, 12 hearts and 11 lungs.
