Large-scale rescue operation unfolded on the morning of September 25 in the Aegean Sea afterfire on the cargo ferry BLUE CARRIER 2 north of Mykonos. All 29 people on board were evacuated and are safe.
According to official information from Attica Ferries, the fire started in 08:57when the ship was on a regular voyage.
On board were 28 crew members and one truck driver. After the fire started, the crew used standard fire extinguishing equipment and carried out an organized evacuation.
People left the ship on lifeboats, after which they were picked up by ships passing nearby. Later everyone was taken to the island Tinos. According to reports, there are no casualties.
The fire started in the garage
According to preliminary data, the fire was located in one of the BLUE CARRIER 2 car garages.
A version is being considered that the fire could have started in one of the trucks, but the official cause has not yet been established.
According to ERT and Greek media, on board the ship were:
- 166 trucks;
- 29 cars.
BLUE CARRIER 2 left Piraeus, made a stop in Syros and then had to proceed to Kos and Rhodes.
Firefighting ships and helicopters were sent to the ship
A major Coast Guard and Fire Service operation was launched in the area of the incident.
Coast Guard patrol vessels, fire boats, tugboats and commercial vessels passing nearby were dispatched to the fire scene.
Additionally left Piraeus 70-meter rescue tug AIGAION PELAGOSequipped with fire extinguishing and rescue equipment.
The operation also involved two fire service helicopters.
The ship continued to be extinguished after evacuation
After all people left BLUE CARRIER 2, the main task of the rescuers shifted to localizing the fire and preventing it from spreading across the cargo decks.
Footage from the scene showed thick black smoke rising from the ship and open flames near the car deck.
Due to the large number of cars and cargo inside garages, extinguishing such fires is particularly difficult: fire can spread between cars, and access inside is limited.
