Trump at the UN: ultimatum to Iran, promise on Ukraine and bet on “superintelligence”

Donald Trump’s speech at the 81st UN General Assembly lasted about 37 minutes and turned into a policy statement on US foreign policy. The central topics were Iran, Ukraine, artificial intelligence and the role of international organizations.

Briefly about the main thing

  • Trump said Iran faces a choice between an agreement and further military escalation;
  • according to him, the war in Ukraine could end “faster than many people think”;
  • The US opposes international restrictions on the development of artificial intelligence;
  • Trump suggested talking not about AI, but about “super intelligence” – “superintelligence”;
  • The US President again criticized the International Criminal Court and a number of UN institutions.

Iran: the toughest part of speech

Trump made his most harsh statements against Tehran. He reiterated that Iran should not get nuclear weaponsand called on other states to increase economic pressure on the Islamic Republic.

At the same time, the US President left the possibility of negotiations, saying that he was counting on an agreement, but at the same time warned of extremely dire consequences in the event of further confrontation.

The Iranian delegation left the hall during this part of the speech. Reuters and AP note that it was the topic of Iran that became one of the central ones in the speech of the American president.

Ukraine: “faster than many people think”

Speaking about the war in Ukraine, Trump said that the United States continues contacts with Moscow and Kiev and expects to achieve an end to the conflict.

“I think it will happen much faster than many people realize,” he said, without providing a specific plan or timeline.

Separately, Trump mentioned Melania Trump’s initiative to return Ukrainian children to their families.

AI without global control

Another important part of the speech concerned artificial intelligence. Trump opposed the creation of an international system that could limit the development of AI.

He suggested using the term “super intelligence” and stated that the United States intends to encourage the development of such technologies, rather than restrain them.

This directly contrasts the American approach with the idea of international regulation of AI risks, which is promoted by some countries and technology experts.

Criticism of international institutions

Trump also attacked the International Criminal Court, calling it an institution hostile to the United States, and again questioned the effectiveness of some international structures.

At the same time, he used the UN platform to demonstrate US power – from Venezuela and Cuba to new military agreements in Greenland.

Editorial comment

The main feature of this speech is the combination of three lines: harsh use of force, technological leadership and distrust of international restrictions.

Trump did not propose a new model of world order, but he showed quite clearly what role the United States intends to play in the existing system.
