After the death of Mazonakis, old questions about the Ayus “blood purification” system surfaced

After the death of Georgos Mazonakis, the story of the machine used during his plasmapheresis procedure takes on a completely different meaning. Questions about Ayus technologies arose in the United States almost a year before the tragedy, but in Greece similar equipment continued to be used.

Briefly about the main thing

  • The American law firm Migliaccio & Rathod LLP began studying the activities of Ayus Medical Group AG on November 5, 2025.
  • The questions were about devices that were promoted as a way to remove PFAS and microplastics from the blood.
  • Lawyers said they found no published clinical data confirming the effectiveness and safety of such use.
  • A system associated with Ayus Medical Devices AG was used during the procedure of Georgos Mazonakis in Athens.
  • The investigation found that the device repeatedly gave alarm signals during the procedure.
  • The Athens Medical Association said the office on Karneado Street had not received permission to perform plasmapheresis.

Questions arose in the USA

November 5, 2025 American law firm Migliaccio & Rathod LLP announced the beginning of its own investigation in relation to Ayus Medical Group AG and its associated plasma filtration devices.

It is important to clarify: we are talking not about an investigation by an American government regulatorbut about a legal review initiated by a private law firm in connection with possible consumer claims.

Nevertheless, the questions raised by the lawyers were very serious.

They studied systems used in the American Clarify Clinics and Proxima Health and advertised as a way to remove PFAS and microplastics.

Lawyers said they could not find published clinical studies that would confirm the effectiveness or safety of the devices specifically for such “cleaning” procedures of the body.

At issue was also whether patients could pay significant sums for procedures that appeared to have more potential than the available scientific evidence allowed.

And in Athens the equipment continued to work

Less than a year later, the system associated with Ayus Medical Devices AGfound herself at the center of an investigation already in Greece.

On September 9, Georgos Mazonakis underwent a plasmapheresis procedure in a private medical office on Carneado Street in Kolonaki. During the procedure, the 54-year-old singer became ill. He suffered cardiac arrest and died.

Ayus stated that cooperates fully with the Greek authorities and is reviewing available information, but will not comment on the cause of death or possible liability until the investigation is complete.

The mere fact of using the Ayus device does not prove that the device caused Mazonakis’ death. This issue must be determined by experts and the investigation.

But the problem is much broader than just one device.

The Athens Medical Association said that the office on Karneado Street permission to perform plasmapheresis has never been issued. The premises were registered as a medical office of a different profile, while plasmapheresis is a specialized procedure requiring appropriate equipment, personnel and conditions.

The device warned – the procedure continued

The most serious questions arose after studying the digital log of the device.

According to data provided to the investigation, approximately 11 minutes after the start of the procedure, the device gave the first alarm signal. The operator acknowledged receipt of the warning, but the procedure continued.

At least two more alarms were then recorded. They were also filmed by a cameraman.

The investigation is now trying to establish what exactly these warnings meant, why the procedure continued after them, and to what extent the doctors’ actions complied with safety requirements.

A separate issue is the time to call an ambulance. According to the investigation, a significant period of time could have passed between the first alarm signals and the call to EKAB.

It was the device’s log that became one of the key digital evidence in the criminal case.

Why weren’t these questions asked earlier?

It turns out to be an extremely unpleasant picture.

As early as November 2025, questions were publicly raised outside of Greece about the scientific basis of some of the claims related to Ayus systems. Ten months later, the manufacturer’s equipment is found in an Athens medical office performing a procedure for which the Athens Medical Association says it was not authorized.

During the procedure itself, the device repeatedly signals a problem. After some time the patient dies.

None of these facts individually prove the equipment defect or its direct connection with the death of Mazonakis.

But together they raise obvious questions: who checked such equipment before its use in Greece, for what medical indications was it approved, who controlled the procedure, and why did a specialized system even end up in an office that did not have permission for plasmapheresis?

Editorial comment

The most dangerous mistake now is to declare the Ayus device a “death machine” in advance. The investigation did not establish this.

But it is no less dangerous to pretend that there are no questions.

They existed even before the death of Mazonakis. In the US, lawyers have already tested the validity of claims to remove microplastics and PFAS. In Greece, it now appears that specialized equipment was used in a premises that, according to the Athens Medical Association, was not given the appropriate permit.

And the digital log of the machine itself shows that during Georgos Mazonakis’s last procedure, the system repeatedly alerted the operator to a problem.

Therefore, the main question today is not even “is Ayus dangerous.” The main question is much broader: How was the medical technology, about which there were already questions, used in Greece, who controlled its use and why were warning signs not stopped in time?
