Mitsotakis promises a fuel oil price cheaper than €1.75 and an increase in heating benefits

The Greek government is preparing a new intervention ahead of the heating season: Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that heating oil must enter the market at a price below €1.75 per liter and the heating allowance will be increased.

Mitsotakis announced this on the evening of September 17 in an interview with ERTNews. The statement came against the backdrop of a continuing rise in prices for energy resources and regular automobile fuel, the average price of which is already close to €2.20 per liter.

Briefly about the main thing:
— they want to bring heating diesel to the market at a price below €1.75 per liter;
– the government promises horizontal increase in heating allowance;
— exact new benefit amounts have not yet been announced;
— the decision is being prepared against the backdrop of expensive oil and rising fuel prices;
— details are expected closer to the beginning of the heating season.

Price below €1.75

According to Mitsotakis, the government intends to intervene in such a way that when sales of heating fuel begin, its price will be below €1.75 per liter.

For comparison, the international price of Brent has already exceeded $106 per barrel, and has increased by about 19% over the past month. This pressure has already reached Greek gas stations: The average price of unleaded petrol is close to €2.20 per liter.

“Athens News” today already wrote about sharp rise in fuel costsespecially on the islands where diesel in some places is approaching €2.60, and premium gasoline – €2.75.

The benefit will also increase

The second element of the package is increase in heating allowance. The Prime Minister announced a horizontal increase in payments, that is, the measure should affect all recipients of the program, and not just certain regions or categories.

However, specific amounts, new coefficients and income limits have not yet been published. Therefore, it is too early to talk about exactly how much the payment will increase for a particular family.

Practical information about utility costs, heating and other fixed costs is collected in the section “Housing and utilities”. You can see the general picture of household expenses in our material “Cost of Living in Greece in 2026”.

Why are the authorities in a hurry?

The energy situation has deteriorated sharply in recent weeks. The rise in oil has already hit automobile fuels, and without intervention, the same scenario could repeat itself with heating diesel at the start of the season.

Therefore, the government is trying to show in advance that it will not allow another sharp jump in household spending in the fall and winter. This is especially important for Northern Greece and mountainous regions, where the heating season begins earlier and lasts longer.

For now this is a promise, not a ready-made tariff

It is important that the price €1.75 is not yet a set retail price. This is a political goal that the government announced before the start of the heating season.

The same applies to the increase in benefits: the increase itself has been announced, but the final parameters must be formalized in separate decisions and published officially.

Editor’s comment: after gasoline at €2.20 and island prices up to €2.60–2.75, the authorities are clearly trying to prevent the same scenario from repeating with heating. But what will be important to the consumer is not the stated goal, but the real price at the pump in October and November – plus the actual amount of benefit that a particular household will receive.
