Taxis in Athens and Thessaloniki are becoming more expensive: a trip from the airport to the center of Athens will cost €50–65

Taxi trips between Athens and Thessaloniki airports and the two city centers will become more expensive: fixed price in Athens will rise to €50 during the day and €65 at night, at the same time ordinary city tariff will remain unchanged.

The new rates were agreed following consultations between the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and industry representatives. They will take effect after the relevant decision is published in Εφημερίδα της Κυβερνήσεως – ΦΕΚ. Until then, current rates will continue to apply.

Briefly about the main thing:
– Athens airport – center: €50 during the day instead of €40;
– Athens airport – center at night: €65 instead of €55;
– Thessaloniki Airport – center: €28 instead of €25;
— at night in Thessaloniki: €38 instead of €35;
— waiting hour: €20 instead of €15;
— basic metered fare and minimum trip cost €4 does not change.

Athens Airport: immediate plus €10

The most notable increase concerns the fixed route between the international airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” and the center of Athens.

Currently the official fixed price is €40 during the day And €55 at night. After the new tariffs come into force, the trip will cost accordingly €50 and €65.

Thus, a day trip becomes more expensive by immediately 25%and night – by about 18%. According to Greek media, we are talking about routes like from the airport to the center and in the opposite direction.

Thessaloniki: less increase

In Thessaloniki the increase will be more moderate. Fixed price between airports “Macedonia” and the city center will increase from €25 to €28 during the daytime.

The night rate will increase from €35 to €38.

Thus, unlike Athens, where the passenger will have to pay €10 more, in Thessaloniki the increase will be €3 per trip.

Waiting also becomes more expensive

The prices for waiting for a car are also changing. The hourly special fee increases from €15 to €20.

In addition, the maximum amount for waiting, which can be set by free agreement between the driver and the passenger, increases from €25 to €40.

This point is especially important for passengers who agree in advance with the driver about a long wait – for example, near a hospital, government agency, hotel or event venue.

A regular trip to Athens has not yet become more expensive

It is important that speech there is no talk of a general increase in taxi fares. As sources from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport separately emphasize, the basic day and night tariffs according to the meter remain unchanged.

The minimum cost of the trip also does not change – €4.

That is, a trip, for example, from Syntagma to Kipseli, Pangrati or Neos-Kosmos itself should not become more expensive due to the new solution. The main changes concern airports and waiting.

Why is this important for tourists

The fixed tariff from Athens airport is used by a huge number of tourists and foreigners coming to the capital. After the price change, the official daily price to the center will be €50night – €65.

This is especially important to remember against the backdrop of cases of overpriced travel. Athens News previously wrote about a driver who demanded from clients €175 instead of official €40 for a trip from the airport to the center of Athens.

It is therefore useful to know the set price in advance, and in case of a suspicious amount, save the receipt, car number and driver details.

When will the new prices take effect?

New prices at the time of publication have not yet entered into force. They will only apply after the publication of the ministerial decision in the ΦΕΚ.

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, a corresponding publication is expected in the coming days. Until then, passengers must pay the current flat rates.

For comparison, in our recent material on the cost of living in Greece in 2026 The current tariff from the airport to the center of Athens was still €40 during the day and €55 at night. After the publication of a new ΦΕΚ, this table will also have to be updated.

Editor’s comment: increase in airport fares in Athens by €10 immediately looks noticeable, especially against the backdrop of a general increase in transport and fuel costs. At the same time, it is important not to create the impression that “all taxis have become more expensive”: the usual basic tariffs remain the same for now. For passengers, the main practical change is that a trip between the airport and the center of the capital will soon cost €50 during the day and €65 at night.
