Student housing benefit in Greece: up to €2,500 – platform reopened until September 22

The Greek Ministry of Education has reopened platform for applying for student housing allowance for the academic year 2025–2026. The new period is from September 17 to 22, 2026.

The repeat opportunity is intended for those potential recipients who did not have time to submit an application during the main period from June 30 to July 31. The application is submitted through the official platform stegastiko.minedu.gov.gr using TAXISnet codes. The Ministry of Education officially confirmed the re-opening of the platform on September 17.

Briefly about the main thing:
– applications are being accepted again from 17 to 22 September;
— the payment is €1,500, €2,000 or €2,500 depending on conditions;
– a maximum of €2,500 is received by students outside Attica and the Thessaloniki regional unit when renting together with another student;
— the application is submitted via TAXISnet;
— we are talking about benefits for the academic year 2025–2026.

How much do they pay

The amount of the benefit depends on the place of study and whether the student rents housing alone or with another student.

  • €1,500 per year — the basic amount of student housing allowance.
  • €2,000 — for students studying at universities outside the Attica region and the Thessaloniki regional unit.
  • €2,000 – also when sharing housing with another student, subject to the terms of the program.
  • €2,500 – if the student studies outside Attica and the regional unit of Thessaloniki and at the same time rents the same apartment with another student.

These dimensions are fixed by the current regulatory framework of the program and published by the Ministry of Education on the official portal: Frequently asked questions about the benefit.

Who is applying?

In most cases, the application is submitted by the parent for whom the student is registered as dependent family member in the tax return. This is due to the provisions Article 11 N. 4172/2013.

The student himself submits an application independently if:

  • he is an orphan of both parents;
  • his parents constantly live abroad;
  • he is over 25 years old;
  • he files his own tax return and is not considered a dependent family member.

The official list of recipients and submission procedure are published on the page “Δικαιούχοι του επιδόματος”.

Who is not eligible for benefits?

The program applies to students first higher education. Master’s and doctoral students are not included in it. Also, according to official clarifications, the benefit does not apply to students of the Greek Open University.

In addition, the student must meet duration of study and other program requirements. In a joint tenancy, the second student must also study to obtain the first diploma and not exceed the standard duration of study.

What law is the program based on?

The basic normative act remains Article 10 of Law N. 3220/2004 about student housing allowance. Subsequently, it was changed several times.

Key latest benefit increase introduced Article 205 of Law N. 5094/2024which amended paragraphs 1 and 7 of Article 10 N. 3220/2004.

The procedure for providing benefits and the necessary documents are regulated by a joint ministerial decision ΚΥΑ 128839/Ζ1, ΦΕΚ Β΄5438/20.10.2022which modified the previous ΚΥΑ 140832/Ζ1/25-8-2017. A complete list of current regulations has been published by the Ministry of Education in the section “Θεσμικό πλαίσιο”.

Why is this especially relevant right now?

The re-opening of the platform came just the day after a student protest in Athens, whose participants demanded the expansion of dormitories, limiting rent increases and increasing housing benefits. According to student associations, existing dormitories cover only a small part of housing needs.

The problem is especially acute against the backdrop of a sharp increase in the cost of small apartments and studios. “Athens News” has already been analyzed in detail, How student housing turned into a “golden business”and also published practical material about the cost of renting studios and ways to find cheaper housing.

Practically: if you missed the main deadline in the summer, now is actually a second chance. To September 22 you need to log in via TAXISnet on official platformcheck your tax and rental information and submit your application. You shouldn’t put it off until the last day, especially if you need to correct your rental data or confirm your shared residence.
Editor’s comment: The payment itself, up to €2,500, looks significant, but given the current cost of student rent, it does not always solve the problem. In Athens and popular university towns, this amount may only cover a few months of rent for a small studio. However, for families who are already incurring significant costs for their child’s education and living in another city, this opportunity is clearly not worth missing out on.
