Car turned into a pile of scrap metal: three dead in overnight crash in Glyfada

A night trip along Poseidonos Avenue ended in tragedy: A car carrying five young people ran off the road and crashed into a wall in Glyfada – three died, two more 18-year-olds were hospitalized, one of them is in intensive care.

The accident occurred around 02:00 September 17 on Poseidonos Avenue, near the intersection with Kalypsos Street, in the lane towards Athens. According to the police, the car, for a reason that has not yet been definitively established, lost control and crashed into a wall with enormous force.

Briefly about the main thing:
– the accident occurred around 02:00 in Glyfada;
– were in the car five people;
— the driver, 23 years old, and two other young passengers, one of them 26 years old, died;
— two 18-year-old passengers were hospitalized;
— one of them is in critical condition and intubated;
— the police have previously ruled out the involvement of another car;
— considered among the main versions very high speed.

The car was crushed like a tin can

The force of the impact was so great that the car suffered catastrophic damage, and its debris was scattered over a considerable distance. To extract the people, a fire service operation was required using special rescue equipment.

Worked on site 8 firefighters and three cars. Rescuers had to free the passengers inside from the mangled body.

Three died, two are fighting for life

ERT reports deaths 23-year-old driver, 26-year-old passenger and another young man. Two other passengers, both 18, were taken to hospital.

One of the 18-year-olds is in the intensive care unit and intubated. The condition of the second, who received multiple injuries, is better assessed, but he also remains under medical supervision.

The final cause of the accident has not yet been established. Τροχαία collects recordings from CCTV cameras and studies the trajectory of the car.

According to preliminary police data, participation of a second car is excluded. Witnesses also report heavy braking just before impact and describe the car’s speed as very high. News247 writes that the version of speeding is now one of the main ones in the investigation.

But until the examination is completed, it is premature to say that speed was the only cause of the tragedy.

“There was only smoke and dust”

One of the eyewitnesses said that he first heard a sharp braking, and then an extremely strong blow. After the collision, he said, the accident site was literally covered in smoke and dust.

The picture after the accident is so grave that, judging by the condition of the car, it is difficult to imagine that there could even be survivors inside.

The embankment remains one of the most dangerous night routes in the capital

Poseidonos Avenue combines a wide road, long straight sections and relatively free traffic at night – precisely the conditions that provoke some drivers to greatly exceed the speed limit.

Athens News has already written about traffic rules, fines and safety on the roads of Greeceas well as about new speed cameras and violations in Attica. After the current tragedy, the issue of night speed on Paraliaki again becomes especially relevant.

The new Code has significantly tightened sanctions for dangerous violations, but this accident again shows that a fine only makes sense until the moment of collision. At a speed at which a car practically disintegrates after an impact, the cost of one mistake is no longer measured in money or deprivation of rights.

Editor’s comment: The causes of this accident have yet to be definitively established by the police, so it is impossible to turn a preliminary version of the speed into a ready-made conclusion in advance. But the scale of the destruction and eyewitness accounts once again raise a long-known problem in Paraliaki: at night, the open road too often feels like a race track. This time five young people were traveling in one car. Three will never return home.
