On Tuesday, September 15in Greece a noticeable weather change: rain and thunderstorms will come primarily to the west of the country, the Peloponnese and Crete, and on Wednesday the precipitation zone will shift to the south and the islands.
After a long summer period, the weather in Greece is becoming increasingly noticeable autumn character. According to the latest data from the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.grlocated to the southwest of the country, the Mediterranean baric minimum will begin to more actively influence Greece on Tuesday, September 15.
At the same time, one should not yet talk about extreme nationwide bad weather: ΕΜΥ did not issue a specific emergency warning for the entire country. We are talking primarily about locally expressed rain and thunderstorms in certain regions.
Where are rain and thunderstorms expected?
According to National Observatory of Athens / meteo.grprecipitation will begin in the morning hours and will primarily affect:
- Ionian Islands;
- Western Greece;
- Peloponnese;
- part of Central Greece;
- west of Crete.
During the day the precipitation zone will expand. Localized rain and thunderstorms are also expected:
- in Epirus;
- Western Macedonia;
- Thessaly;
- in the Cyclades.
Residents and tourists should pay particular attention to the situation. Peloponnese, Ionian Islands and Cretewhere the likelihood of longer precipitation is higher.
Patras: rain already during the day
A case in point is Patras. The meteo.gr forecast calls for rain here from around noon and throughout the afternoon.
The temperature will be approx. 24–25°C.
What will happen in Athens
For Attica the picture is much calmer.
In Athens on Tuesday it is expected mainly cloudy weatherwithout signs of severe prolonged bad weather.
Temperatures in the capital will be approximately in the range:
up to +27…+28°C during the day.
Thus, published forecasts do not give any reason to talk about severe thunderstorms directly in Athens as the main scenario of the day.
Crete: deterioration will continue on Wednesday
If the main wave in the west of the country falls on Tuesday, then On September 16, precipitation will remain mainly to the south.
According to the forecast of the National Observatory of Athens, rain and thunderstorms will be most likely on Wednesday:
- in the south of the Peloponnese;
- in Crete;
- in the Cyclades;
- in the Dodecanese.
It is tourists on the islands who should take into account the forecast when:
- sea excursions;
- trips to mountainous areas;
- walking routes;
- planning a beach holiday.
Temperature drops
At the same time, a further decrease in temperature is expected.
In areas that will experience rainfall, maximum values on the mainland will be predominantly around +27°C.
In the Dodecanese, temperatures in some places can still reach about +30°C.
Thus, we are talking not only about a few rains, but about a gradual transition to more typical weather for the second half of September.
What ΕΜΥ says
Official National Meteorological Service of Greece – ΕΜΥ also predicts for September 15:
- cloudiness and localized rain in the southern Ionian Sea;
- rain and isolated thunderstorms in the Peloponnese;
- gradual deterioration of the weather in Crete;
- localized showers in mountainous areas of mainland Greece.
In this evening, some of the phenomena should weaken and concentrate mainly in the area Kythira and Crete.
Not to be confused with Red Alert
On social media, weather changes often quickly turn into “severe weather” or “red alert” messages.
At the time of preparation of the material we are talking about a forecast of worsening weather with localized rain and thunderstorms, and not about an emergency warning ΕΜΥ for the entire territory of Greece.
If the situation changes and meteorologists issue a special emergency bulletin, the forecast will need to be updated.
Drivers should be careful
Even a localized severe thunderstorm in Greece can dramatically worsen road conditions in a short time.
Main risks:
- aquaplaning;
- decreased visibility;
- water on low sections of roads;
- rapid filling of small watercourses.
During a heavy rainstorm, you should not attempt to cross a flooded section of road just because the water appears shallow.
Forecast may be updated
The Mediterranean pressure minimum continues to develop, so the location of the heaviest precipitation may change as new meteorological data becomes available.
Athens News will follow updates from ΕΜΥ and the National Observatory of Athens.
