In Greece, they are preparing a serious reform of the civil service: they want to link promotion to assessment and skills, and select managers through exams. At the same time, 1,892 vacancies are opening in ministries, municipalities, museums and the Coast Guard.
Two topics about the public sector hit the front pages of Greek newspapers today.
“Απογευματινή” writes about the new procedure for promoting civil servants, and “Ελεύθερος Τύπος” — about the set 1,892 permanent and temporary workers.
Promotions will no longer be automatic
The Ministry of Internal Affairs bill is already being considered by a parliamentary committee. Its main idea is to link career advancement not only with experience, but also with:
- assessment results;
- level of professional skills;
- exams;
- experience in leadership positions.
Under the new model, length of service alone will not be enough to move to the next level.
Seven service levels instead of five
The project provides for a new system of seven βαθμοί – service levels instead of the current five.
For most workers, the final level will be Γ, and the higher levels will be associated with the positions of directors and general managers.
The minimum time to complete the entire career ladder will be approximately:
- ΠΕ – 16 years old;
- ΤΕ – 19 years old;
- ΔΕ – 25 years;
- ΥΕ – 25 years old.
But even after this period has expired, the increase will not be automatic: a positive assessment will be required.
For managers – written exam
For candidates for the positions of chiefs and directors, a supervised written examination is provided ΑΣΕΠ.
According to the project:
50% of the final result will be formed through an exam, the remaining 50% will be based on qualifications, experience and previous work in leadership positions.
In addition, there should be a special register of candidates for leadership positions.
A digital “presence card” will also appear
Another notable innovation is the electronic registration of the physical presence of civil servants.
The bill allows the use of a digital card and, under certain conditions, biometric technologies.
At the same time, 1,892 vacancies are opening
The second practical news is a large package of recruitment into the public sector.
According to “Ελεύθερος Τύπος”are opening or preparing in the near future 1,892 permanent and seasonal places.
Vacancies are available in:
- ministries;
- municipalities;
- museums;
- utility companies;
- Greek Coast Guard.
420 places – in the Coast Guard
One of the largest sets – 420 new Λιμενοφύλακες.
Of these:
- 126 places – general category;
- 210 – for those who served in special units of the Armed Forces;
- 84 – for Navy combat swimmers.
The full competition must be published in FΕK.
131st place – in the Acropolis Museum
The Acropolis Museum is recruiting 131 employees for six month contracts:
- 95 security guards;
- 36 administrative and accounting employees.
Some positions require very good knowledge of English, French or German.
There are also vacancies in municipalities
Among the already announced or upcoming sets:
- 9 employees in the Komotini public utility;
- 16 cleaning workers and drivers for the Malevizi municipality;
- 8 specialists – psychologists, social workers, teachers and others – in Santorini.
Where to follow competitions
For those who are really looking for work in the public sector, it is better to focus not on newspaper selections, but on official announcements:
ΑΣΕΠ – competitions and applications
Ministry of Internal Affairs – recruitment
