Before his death, Mazonakis spoke about the threat of murder: what is known about his conflicts in recent years

After the death of Yorgos Mazonakis, attention was drawn to a phrase from his last major interview: the singer claimed that a lawyer told him about a document at the US Embassy that allegedly spoke of a plan to kill him. There is no confirmation of the document itself yet.

This is a special edition of the program “ΤΕΤ-Α-ΤΕΤ” Thasos Tryphonos, shown in July 2026. In the conversation, Mazonakis said that his legal representative told him about a certain document located in the American embassy in Athens, which allegedly mentioned a threat to kill him.

The singer himself, judging by his words, did not want to attach much importance to this. However, after his death and against the backdrop of a criminal investigation, this phrase acquired a completely different weight.

It is important to emphasize: There is currently no public confirmation of the existence of such a document from the US Embassy, police or prosecutor’s office.

Recent years have been filled with conflicts

Over the past two years, some serious controversies have indeed accumulated around Masonakis.

The most painful thing was the conflict with his family, primarily with his sister Vaso Mazonaki, who had been involved in his affairs for many years. The dispute concerned the management of companies and real estate. In 2025, the situation worsened after his forced hospitalization in Dromokaitio, which the artist himself subsequently publicly criticized. The family, for their part, argued that they acted out of fear for his health.

Another high-profile conflict arose with the club owner Fever by Thanasis Papageorgiou. Mazonakis connected what was happening around him with an attempt at pressure and contacted the anti-extortion unit. Papageorgiou categorically denied the accusations and, on the contrary, made financial claims against the singer, sending him an out-of-court notice.

There were also complaints related to alleged sexual harassment, which Mazonakis denied, calling the allegations false and linking them to a broader conflict surrounding himself.

But conflicts do not mean involvement in death

There is a fundamental boundary here.

None of these disputes on their own does not provide grounds to connect specific people with a possible threat to the life of Mazonakis, or even more so with his death.

To date, the official investigation has focused primarily on the actions of the doctors, medical equipment, the time of the EKΑΒ call and the digital data recovered by the investigation.

That is why it is more correct to consider the story with the alleged document from the American embassy as circumstance that requires verificationand not as evidence of the existence of a conspiracy.

Why is it still important?

If such a document really existed, it would be logical for the investigation to establish:

  • who provided the information;
  • when did she appear;
  • what kind of threat was being discussed;
  • whether the Greek authorities were notified;
  • whether any verification was carried out.

So far, the answers to these questions are not publicly known.

Result: Mazonakis did speak publicly about the reported death threat against him. But today this remains his own story, and not a fact confirmed by the investigation. The list of his many conflicts may explain why he felt pressured, but it does not allow anyone to conclude that anyone was involved in his death.
