Family of Giorgos Mazonakis entered into criminal proceedings against two doctors at a medical office in Kolonaki and demanded that their telephone connections be checked in order to reconstruct the last hours of the famous singer’s life.
The investigation into the death of the 54-year-old artist received a new continuation after searches in the Stem Cell medical office and the detention of two doctors who worked there.
As previously reported “Athens News”Mazonakis lost consciousness in a room on Karneado Street in Kolonaki, after which he was taken without a pulse or breathing on his own to the Elpis Hospital. Resuscitation measures did not produce results.
Later case developed into an investigation into the legality of the medical office’s activitieswhere, according to the investigation, a plasmapheresis procedure was performed.
The family is officially in business
The relatives’ lawyer said SKYthat the family has already announced its entry into the process in support of the charges – παράσταση προς υποστήριξη της κατηγορίας – against both doctors, as well as any other person whose responsibility may be revealed by the investigation.
At the same time, a criminal complaint is being prepared – μήνυση. In this way, the family becomes an active party in the process and has the opportunity, through its lawyers, to file motions, present evidence, and engage its own technical consultant.
We are talking about the owner of the office, therapist Ilias Theodoropoulos, and his wife Ioanna Gaka, who, according to published testimony, suggested Mazonakis undergo plasmapheresis and was directly involved in preparing the procedure.
Both doctors are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court.
Why was it necessary to disclose telephone connections?
One of the family’s main demands was to remove the secrecy of telephone connections of persons who were in the office or related to the events.
We can talk primarily about technical data: time and duration of calls, numbers of interlocutors and sequence of connections. Access to the content of conversations or messages is only possible if relevant data and a separate legal basis are provided.
Telephone details can show:
- when doctors first realized that the singer’s condition had deteriorated sharply;
- at what time the National Emergency Assistance Center was called;
- who the office staff called before and after calling the ambulance;
- whether they sought advice from other doctors;
- whether the sequence of calls matches the testimony of the participants.
Relatives cannot obtain this information on their own. The decision to declassify communications must be made by the competent judicial authorities as part of the investigation.
Three-hour gap in readings
Particular attention of the investigation was drawn to the time of Mazonakis’s arrival at the office.
According to information MEGAdoctors initially said that the singer appeared on the premises at approximately 16:00.
However, surveillance camera footage, according to the TV channel, shows that Mazonakis arrived at approximately 13:00. Consequently, a three-hour period arises, the events of which must be reconstructed.
The investigation is checking what the singer was doing at this time, what examinations were performed on him, what drugs could have been administered and when exactly the procedure began.
Detention of two doctors, a three-hour gap and the results of studying camera recordings. MEGA report.
Has the procedure already begun?
Another possible contradiction concerns the moment of cardiac arrest.
Ioanna Gaka, according to Greek media publications, claimed that Mazonakis lost consciousness during the installation of the second venous catheter and that the procedure itself had not yet begun.
But the data collected by the investigation may indicate something else. MEGA reports that the plasmapheresis machine was in operation for about 45 minutes. In addition, arriving KAK officers allegedly saw it turned on.
If this information is confirmed by technical expertise, the investigation will have to find out whether the singer was connected to the device, what volume of blood passed through the system and what solutions or drugs were used.
At the same time, the functioning of the device does not in itself prove that plasmapheresis caused cardiac arrest. To establish a causal relationship, the results of forensic, toxicological and technical examinations will be required.
Five folders and bags of materials
Police officers and representatives of the Athens Medical Union spent about eight hours in the office. According to Greek media, several folders, bags of materials and digital media were taken from there.
The materials may contain medical records, information about prescribed procedures, documents for equipment, logs of its use, medications and data about other patients.
A search was also carried out at the doctors’ place of residence.
The investigation will have to establish not only the circumstances of Mazonakis’ death, but also how long plasmapheresis procedures were carried out in the office, how many patients underwent them, and whether this activity complied with the issued license.
The family appoints its own specialist
The forensic examination, scheduled for Friday, is to take place in the presence of a technical consultant appointed by the singer’s relatives.
The family representative will have the opportunity to observe the research, study its results and, if necessary, pose additional questions to the experts.
Decisive may be:
- the exact cause of cardiac arrest;
- the presence of drugs or other substances in the body;
- possible electrolyte imbalance;
- data on previous diseases;
- possible connection between a medical procedure and a sudden deterioration of the condition.
Why the family doesn’t believe in mere coincidence
Relatives want answers not only about the procedure itself, but also about the decision to allow a patient who, according to available evidence, had been feeling unwell for several days.
In addition, information appeared that a few days before his death Mazonakis was already losing consciousness in a restaurant in Kifissya. The investigation should check whether this was reported to doctors and whether the necessary examination was carried out before plasmapheresis.
It is of fundamental importance for the family to establish why a complex medical procedure was planned to be carried out in an office registered as a regular general practitioner’s office, without hospital infrastructure and, according to the results of the inspection, without a defibrillator.
The responsibility of doctors has not yet been established. However, a statement from the family, a request for telephone data, camera recordings and the results of searches turn the initial version of sudden cardiac arrest into a full-fledged criminal investigation into the last hours of the singer’s life.
