In Athens, a 54-year-old woman gave birth to a healthy girl from her own embryo, which was cryopreserved for more than 22 years.
Girl weighing 3490 grams was born on September 9. The embryo was frozen on March 17, 2004, and its transfer took place on December 23, 2025 at a private medical center in Athens.
Thus, between cryopreservation and the birth of the child, 22 years, 5 months and 23 days.
Gynecologist Konstantinos Pantos’ research team has collected clinical and laboratory data and intends to submit a case report for publication in an international medical journal.
A record – but with an important clarification
According to Greek doctors, we are talking about the longest published shelf life autologous genetic materialculminating in the birth of a child. This means that the woman’s own embryo, left over from her initial fertility treatment, was used.
Previously, similar cases were reported in the scientific literature after 18 years and 3 months of storage in Japan and after 17 years in Israel.
However, calling the Athenian birth an absolute world record would be incorrect. In the USA, children have already been born from donor embryoswhich were in a frozen state for more than 30 years. The difference in the Greek case lies precisely in the woman’s use of her own embryo after more than two decades.
In addition, the conclusion about the scientific record is still up to the treating team. Independent confirmation will be available once the medical data have been published and reviewed.
Behind the medical achievement is a family tragedy
The story has a heavy human side. In 2004, Hristina Rapti-Tselepi underwent her first embryo transfer and gave birth to a healthy boy.
The embryos remaining after treatment continued to be stored frozen. In October 2025, the family lost their 21-year-old son in a car accident.
Experiencing the loss, the woman decided to use one of the surviving embryos. The born girl is thus the genetic sister of the deceased young man.
“There was mourning and joy, but this morning everything disappeared when we held our baby in our arms,” the mother told Greek television.
Pregnancy at the border of the established age
The family had to act in a short time frame. Greek law allows the use of assisted reproduction methods until a woman reaches 54 years old.
Women aged 50 to 54 must obtain special permission National Administration of Medical Assisted Reproduction.
According to the family, the necessary medical and administrative procedures had to be completed before reaching the age limit. Permission was received, after which doctors performed an embryo transfer.
What does this case prove?
Cryopreservation is carried out at a very low temperature, which practically stops the biological processes inside the embryo. Therefore, the duration of storage in itself does not necessarily mean a deterioration in its condition if the temperature regime has not been violated.
At the same time, successful thawing does not guarantee pregnancy. The result depends on the quality of the embryo, the condition of the endometrium, the freezing method and the general health of the woman.
The age of the patient is of particular importance in this case. Pregnancy after 50 years is associated with an increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, thrombosis, premature birth and other complications, and therefore requires careful medical supervision.
Konstantinos Pantos called the birth an important clinical and scientific event, emphasizing that assisted reproduction must combine the capabilities of modern medicine with safety requirements and a humane attitude towards patients.
