Seismic series continues in Western Greece after a significant earthquake in the area of Aitoliko, Mesolonghi and Agrinio.
According to Greek media, the main earthquake was recorded on the morning of September 8 at 10:46. Automatic solutions from different services gave similar estimates of the magnitude – about 4.3–4.4and the epicenter was located north of Aitoliko, in a wider zone between Mesolonghi and Agrinio.
Seismic activity, however, was not limited to one event. As reported on air ERTnews professor of seismology Efthimios Lekkastremors have been recorded in this zone since the evening of September 7, and we are already talking about local seismic series.

What happened
The earthquake was felt by residents Aitoliko, Mesolonghi, Agrinio and other areas of Aetolia-Acarnania. According to Naftemporikithe epicenter was approximately eight kilometers north of Aitoliko, and the depth of the outbreak was estimated at approximately 20 kilometers.
Greek publications note that many residents were especially wary not so much because of the very first shock, but because subsequent aftershocks. So far there have been no reports of casualties or serious damage, but the series continues to be closely monitored by specialists.
What seismologists say
According to Efthimios Lekkas, the first estimates indicate a connection between activity and Ozeros faultwhich stretches from the Amfilohia region to Mesolonghi. He described it as horizontal displacement faultcapable of producing earthquakes of similar magnitude.
Lekkas emphasized that currently no reason to panichowever, it is too early to consider this series completely completed. According to his assessment, in the near future it is possible new tremors with a magnitude of about 4–4.5. That is why scientists continue to monitor the development of the situation in real time.
Why is this important
Western Greece is one of the most seismically active areas of the country, so even relatively moderate earthquakes are carefully analyzed here. For residents, the main thing now is not only the strength of the shock that has already occurred, but also how the series will behave further – whether it will die out in the coming hours or days or continue with new felt fluctuations.
Seismologists emphasize that after such events aftershocks are normal. Therefore, isolated aftershocks in and of themselves do not indicate a catastrophic scenario, but do require observation and caution, especially in older buildings and in areas where people are particularly sensitive to vibration.
What should residents do?
If tremors occur again, experts traditionally advise staying calm, not using elevators during vibrations, moving away from objects that could fall, and monitoring messages Civil Defense and official seismological services.
For now, the main conclusion is this: the earthquake in the Aitoliko area was not an isolated episodebut has turned into a series that may still give new felt aftershocks, although experts still assess the situation as controlled.
