Gasoline in Greece fixed at €2.10: how much does it cost to refuel a car now?

Average price of regular 95 gasoline in Greece reached €2.10 per liter – and for drivers this already means additional tens of euros with each full refueling.

The growth that the market warned about back in August actually took place. According to the official Supervisory Board on Liquid Fuel Prices (Παρατηρητήριο Τιμών Υγρών Καυσίμων), on September 8 the average price of regular 95 gasoline in the country was €2,100 per liter.

For comparison, on August 26 it was about €2,033. Thus, in less than two weeks, fuel prices have risen by approximately 6.7 cents per liter.

In Athens €2.08, much more expensive on the islands

The difference between regions remains large.

  • Athens – approx. €2.08/l;
  • Eastern Attica – approx. €2.09/l;
  • Thessaloniki – approx. €2.08/l;
  • Heraklion – approx. €2.14/l;
  • Dodecanese – approx. €2.22/l;
  • Cyclades – approx. €2.31/l.

At some gas stations on the islands the price is close to €2.50.

“Athens News” have already talked about the price gap between mainland Greece and the islands.

How much does a full tank cost now?

With an average price of €2.10, the calculation is simple:

  • 40 liters – €84;
  • 50 liters – €105;
  • 60 liters – €126.

And if you refuel in the Cyclades at an average price of €2.31, then a 60-liter tank costs almost €139.

For a family that uses a car every day, a difference of even 10–15 cents per liter turns into a noticeable amount over the course of a month.

Why is gasoline becoming more expensive again?

The main external factor is the international price of oil. Brent is very close to the level $100 per barrel against the backdrop of another escalation of the situation in the Middle East.

The chairman of the Association of Gas Station Owners of Attica, Nikos Papageorgiou, warned back in August that if Brent reaches $100, the average price of gasoline in Greece could rise to approximately €2.15 per literand diesel – up to €2.15–2.20.

On September 9, the president of the Federation of Gas Station Owners, Michalis Kiusis, went even further, saying on ERTnews Radio that the time may come when drivers will “be happy with gasoline for €2.”

Taxes account for most of the price

Another thing is important: the price at the gas station depends not only on oil.

About 60% of the final cost of fuel in Greece comes from indirect taxes – excise tax and VAT. Therefore, even a fall in the world price of oil does not always lead to a comparable decrease in the price at the pump.

State support for diesel fuel remains in place in September, but gasoline does not have such direct protection to the same extent.

And the fuel pulls everything else with it

Rising prices affect not only car owners.

Expensive diesel increases transportation costs for stores, logistics companies, agricultural producers and delivery services. As a result, part of the increase is gradually transferred to the cost of goods.

That is, €2.10 at the pump is at the same time a potential pressure on prices in the supermarket.

We have already looked at how expensive regular trips around Greece become when you add numerous toll roads.

What is important for the driver: €2.10 is no longer a forecast, but the official average price for the country. If oil remains around $100 or goes higher, the market does not exclude a further increase in the cost of gasoline.
