Russian and Ukrainian publications reported drone attack on the Lady Mariia in the Mediterranean Sea, linking the incident with the area of Crete.
The reports attracted attention due to its supposed proximity to Greece and the vessel’s previous use for military transport. However, published versions differ in details, and the exact coordinates of the attack, the contents of the cargo and the ownership of the drones have not been independently established.
Where did the information come from?
The Insider in a publication dated September 7 refers to the head of the Ukrainian Institute of Black Sea Strategic Studies Andrey Klimenko. According to his information, the ro-ro was in the area of Crete and was moving towards Syria.
The footage was also distributed through Alexander Nevzorov’s channel. In publications, the video is described as ammunition being dropped from drones onto a ship, followed by a fire. Nevzorov announced twelve hits, the launch of drones from Libya and the transportation of Iranian weapons. These details remain the author’s statements.
Ukrainian UNITED24 Media also directly stipulates the absence of official confirmation of Ukrainian participation and independent verification of the cargo version. Multiple retellings of the same video do not translate into multiple independent confirmations.
What is known about Lady Maria
The messages indicate IMO number 9220641, which allows the vessel to be distinguished from ships of the same name. Lady Mariia is a roller coaster flying the Russian flag; This type of vessel is designed for transporting wheeled vehicles and other cargo with horizontal loading.
According to published data, the ship belongs to MG-Fleet and was previously called Stella-Maria. Ukrainian sources refer to information from the Main Intelligence Directorate about its use on the Novorossiysk-Tartus route and the transportation of weapons from Syria.
But information about previous voyages does not establish the contents of the holds during the current episode. The formulation “a vessel associated with military transportation” is more accurate than the statement about the proven presence of Iranian weapons on board.
Why is it important to specify the location?
IN NV publications the region of Crete appears. UNITED24 simultaneously mentions recent tracking data near Sicily and an earlier route towards Syria via the Crete area. Such landmarks require comparison in time.
“Near Crete” does not automatically mean “in Greek territorial waters”. For such a conclusion, the coordinates and set time of the episode are needed. It also cannot be concluded that the launch took place from Greek territory or that Athens facilitated the operation.
In the sources checked for this article, no confirmed statement from the Greek authorities was found identifying the location of the attack, the perpetrators or the consequences for the crew. Reports of casualties, sinking or complete loss of the vessel should also not be supplemented with assumptions.
How does this episode differ from the attack on the Greek tanker?
Previously, Athens News reported about attack on the Siren tanker operated by a Greek company. Lady Mariia is a different ship and a different episode: names, flags, routes and crew information cannot be mixed.
Both stories are important to readers in the context of maritime security. The broader economic background of Russia’s relations with the region is discussed in our material about the Russian-Iranian gas routeand issues of Greek defense are in analysis of the “Shield of Achilles”. These topics are related by general context, but do not prove the circumstances of a specific attack.
What remains to be seen
For a complete picture, we need an independent verification of the video, exact coordinates, information from the shipowner and data on the condition of the people on board. For now, it is reasonable to talk about the widespread messages and footage of the alleged attack. Versions about twelve hits, Iranian cargo and Ukrainian perpetrators must be accompanied by an indication of the source and degree of confirmation.
