Attica: 40 drivers were detained in a week and almost 7,000 violations were identified

Attica Traffic Police let me down results of a large-scale week-long raid: 40 drivers detained, almost 31 thousand checks for alcohol, and the number of other identified violations approached seven thousand.

The special operation took place from the early morning of August 31 until the morning of September 7 on the main roads of Athens and all of Attica.

According to official statement from the Greek policethe staff conducted 30,992 breathalyzers.

Based on their results, it was registered 228 violationsrelated to alcohol consumption. At the same time 17 drivers were detained after the alcohol concentration exceeds the level at which the most serious measures are prescribed.

We talked in detail in the material about exactly what alcohol limits apply in Greece, when the fine begins and in what cases the license is taken away. “Alcohol and driving in Greece: permissible limits, fines and when to take away your license”.

It is especially important to remember: you cannot refuse a breathalyzer test during a road test. What documents need to be presented to the police and what happens if you refuse a check, see our instructions “Stopped by the police in Greece: what documents to show and is it possible to refuse the breathalyzer test”.

Almost 7,000 other violations

In addition to alcohol, the traffic police also recorded 6994 violations.

Among the most common, police cite speeding, driving without a helmet, using a cell phone, running a red light, and driving without a valid driver’s license.

For each of these violations in our cycle there are already separate practical instructions.

For example, the new ΚΟΚ provides separate liability for using a phone while driving. What exactly is considered prohibited use of the device, we explained in the material “Phone while driving in Greece: what is considered use and when will the punishment follow”.

For motorcyclists and scooter riders, checking helmets and traffic rules between rows is especially important. These requirements are discussed in detail in the article “Motorcycles and scooters in Greece: helmet, traffic between the rows and what the new ΚΟΚ has changed”.

And the general system of categories of violations, fines and administrative measures is outlined in our material “The new ΚΟΚ of Greece: how fines and punishments are structured”.

842 cars were taken off the road

The police stopped the traffic 842 vehiclesof which 121 had to be evacuated.

In addition, they were seized 979 driver’s licenses And 371 registration documents.

This is no longer just a story about monetary fines. The new ΚΟΚ provides for the temporary deprivation of the right to drive, the seizure of documents, and the removal of the vehicle from traffic.

If the violation has already led to an accident, the procedure is completely different. To do this, we have put together a separate large series about road accidents, starting with a complete road map for the driver after an accident in Greece and instructions about the first minutes after the accident.

Main: The current mass checks clearly show that the police in Attica control not one specific violation, but the entire set of requirements of the new ΚΟΚ – alcohol, speed, telephone, helmets, documents and the right to drive.
