Today at 20:00 Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will perform at the 90th International Exhibition in Thessaloniki and will present a package of approximately 30 economic and social measures.
In the spotlight – citizens’ incomes, taxes, housing and family support. The government says this is not just the traditional annual ΔΕΘ basket, but the start of a broader economic plan with a horizon of 2030.
According to ERTthe prime minister must present about 30 measuressome of which will begin to operate in the coming months, and some will be implemented in stages in 2027–2030.
Raising the minimum wage
One of the central points will be the next raising the minimum wagewhich is expected from April 2027.
An increase in the minimum wage should automatically affect the wages of some government employees. In addition, a separate additional measure specifically for public sector workers is being discussed.
The government is trying to present wage increases as one of the main tools to combat the ongoing cost of living pressure on households.
Tax breaks for freelance professionals
A separate block is being prepared for freelance professionals and self-employed.
Among the most notable proposals are a reduction in the advance payment of income tax and a change in the mechanism for calculating the so-called imputed income.
According to preliminary data, the amount of imputed income should no longer directly depend on the turnover of the industry to which a particular professional belongs. For some self-employed people, this may mean a noticeable reduction in the tax burden.
Back in August, Athens News spoke in detail about the preparation of this package in the material “Tax breaks and increases in pensions: what Mitsotakis will promise the Greeks during ΔΕΘ”.
Farmers: taxes and direct payments
Our own support package is expected for farmers and agricultural sector.
According to preliminary information, we are talking about both tax benefits and direct financial support.
The prime minister should announce the exact amounts and criteria this evening.
Families with children
The government promises to place special emphasis on demographic problem and expenses of families with children.
One of the most specific measures expected is further convergence of the rights of families with three children and large families.
Government sources also talk about additional measures that should reduce the cost of raising children and make it easier to combine family and professional life.
However, specific parameters for a number of “family” measures have not yet been announced. Therefore, statements about new payments or special savings accounts before the official announcement should be considered unconfirmed scenarios.
New housing package
One of the most anticipated blocks will be housing policy.
The government is preparing a program that should continue or replace the “My Home 1” and “My Home 2” programs.
Among the areas discussed:
- cheaper mortgages;
- use of public real estate for social housing;
- return of empty apartments to the market;
- assistance to young families when purchasing their first home;
- special solutions for workers forced to live in areas with very high rents.
The housing issue is becoming one of the most painful for Greek families, since rental growth in recent years has significantly outpaced income growth.
Small and medium business
A new financing scheme with access to cheaper loans is expected for small and medium-sized businesses.
The government’s goal is to make it easier to finance investment projects for businesses that today face expensive bank loans and limited access to capital.
Not just 2027
The peculiarity of this speech is that the Prime Minister is going to present measures not only for the next financial year.
According to ERT, the government program will actually be designed for four-year period until 2030–2031. It is expected that Mitsotakis will name the sequence of introduction of individual decisions, starting in November 2026.
Earlier, Athens News noted that back in the summer the government was preparing a package of permanent tax breaks worth about 1 billion euros for ΔΕΘ: “ΔΕΘ basket: Greek authorities are preparing a package of tax breaks for 2027”.
The main question is how much will remain in your pocket
For Greek residents, the main thing will not be the number of measures announced, but their real effect: How much money will be left after taxes and how much will the increase offset the rise in prices, rent and the cost of everyday living?.
That is why final conclusions can be made only after the prime minister names specific amounts, income criteria, terms and categories of recipients.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ performance at Bελλίδειο is scheduled for 20:00. Once the measures are announced, Athens News will publish a detailed analysis with specific amounts and examples.
