In Greece for the first time two women completed preparations and began service in the Military Policebecoming the first female military police in the history of the Greek army.
The ceremony took place on September 4 at the Military Police Training Center in Karditsa, located at the Infantry Colonel Thomas Nikitas (Mundzias) camp in Rousseau.
The first women to receive the right to serve in Stratonomy were Constantine Panayiotopoulou And Theopisti Khotidu.
After completing the training course, they received the rank of corporal and officially began their service. Local edition KarditsaLive calls them the first female volunteers to join the Military Police throughout the country.
Continuation of the pilot program
The current ceremony is a continuation of a broader program that the Department of Defense launched in 2026.
In June, Athens News already wrote O the first female volunteers of the Greek army to take the oath in Lamia. Then the program included the first 72 women who decided to undergo voluntary military service.
Now two members of this new model have chosen Military Police – a branch that has traditionally been considered one of the most demanding military specializations.
How the ceremony went
The ceremony was attended by representatives of the military leadership, local authorities and security forces, as well as relatives and friends of the graduates.
After the service, the new servicemen were presented with commemorative diplomas.
The commander of the center, Colonel Zacharopoulos, wished them successful service and emphasized the symbolic significance of their choice.
According to him, the very fact that they were selected from a large number of candidates is a special honor.
“This is a decision for life”
After the ceremony, both women spoke about why they decided to join the army.
Theopisti Khotidu stated that her decision was due to her love for the military environment and the desire to continue serving:
“We wanted to join the army, we like the army family. We are very proud to join the Military Police.”
Konstantina Panayotopoulou, in turn, emphasized her sense of pride in serving the country.
“We are proud to serve our country and actually be on the front lines.”
She also encouraged other women not to be afraid to try the military, calling it a “decision for life.”

What does this mean for the Greek army
The mere fact of the appearance of two women in the Military Police has more symbolic than quantitative significance.
But it shows the direction of reform: the Ministry of Defense is gradually expanding the list of positions and specializations available to women as part of voluntary service.
Until recently, women in the Greek armed forces served mainly as professional soldiers, graduates of military schools or specialists in certain categories. The new model creates a separate volunteer service channel for women for the first time.
That is why the current ceremony in Karditsa is important not as the story of two specific servicemen, but as the first practical result of changing the personnel model of the Greek army.
Editorial comment
The story in Karditsa illustrates well how quickly the women’s voluntary service pilot program begins to transform from a symbolic initiative into a real personnel practice.
A few months ago, we were talking only about the first 72 volunteers who took the oath in Lamia.
Now two of them have already entered the structure of the Military Police.
For the Greek army, this is an important test: if the program is successful, it could gradually spread to other specialties that were previously largely not considered as areas for female volunteers.
So far we are talking about only two servicemen, but it is precisely such small first steps that usually become the beginning of big changes in the army recruitment system.
