The police continue to reconstruct the circumstances murder of a 45-year-old woman in Nea Smirni: camera recordings are being studied, the relationship of the deceased with 48 year old manhis past and last actions before the crime.
Early on Sunday morning August 23, 2026near the entrance to an apartment building on Grigoriou Kydonion Street in Nea Smyrni, the bodies of a man and a woman with gunshot wounds were found.
Police received the call at approximately 5:30 am. The circumstances surrounding the two deaths were initially unknown, so the incident was treated as a double shooting.
A revolver was found near the man’s body. The woman suffered several gunshot wounds, while the man had a head wound. After studying the scene and surveillance camera footage, the police came to the preliminary conclusion that it was a murder of a woman followed by suicide of the attacker.
What the surveillance cameras showed
The key evidence was the recording of a camera installed near the house. According to ERTa 48-year-old man arrived in Nea Smyrni by car, parked it approximately 100 meters from the building and began to wait for the woman to appear.
When the 45-year-old woman came out of the entrance, the man approached her and fired at least two shots. He then turned the revolver on himself and committed suicide.
Some Greek media reported that the man forced the woman to kneel before firing shots. This detail has not yet been confirmed by an official police statement, so the investigation continues to study the full recording of the incident.
Sources also differ on the question of whether the deceased lived in this house with her minor daughter or was visiting there. It is reliably known that the building was connected with the place of residence of her daughter, who was not with her mother at the time of the attack.
The relationship ended, but the man continued to insist
Both the deceased and the alleged killer were Albanian citizens who had lived in Greece for a long time. According to investigators, they previously maintained a personal relationship, but the woman decided to break up with the man.
The sister of the deceased said that she talked about her partner’s excessive jealousy. After the breakup, he allegedly continued to pursue a renewal of the relationship and insisted on meeting. The woman told relatives that she was afraid of him.
Police are reviewing the phone calls, text messages and internet activity of both parties involved in the case to determine whether threats or attempts to set up a meeting preceded the attack.
Contacting the police in 2024
The investigation revealed that in 2024, a 45-year-old woman contacted the police because of her ex-partner. According to available information, after the breakup, the man took her motorcycle and did not want to return it.
However, it has not yet been confirmed that the person involved in that statement was the 48-year-old man who committed the murder. The police are picking up the old case file and identifying the person the woman pointed out at the time.
This is a fundamentally important detail. Until it is officially confirmed, it cannot be said that the police previously received a statement directly against the future attacker and did not respond to it.
Before leaving, he left his wife 1000 euros
New details emerged after the interrogation of the wife of a 48-year-old man. According to Greek media, before traveling to Nea Smyrni, he gave her 1000 euros and said: “Keep them so that you have money.”
The man then left the family home in Tavros and went to the crime scene. Handing over money in combination with driving, choosing a parking spot and waiting for the woman is seen as a possible sign of a pre-planned attack.
However, the police have not yet reported the discovery of a suicide note or other document directly confirming the developed plan.
The wife admitted that she was afraid of him
The man’s wife told investigators that about a year and a half before the crime she noticed changes in his behavior. He was often absent from home, sometimes did not return to spend the night and did not explain where he was.
The woman claims that she did not know about her husband’s relationship with the 45-year-old deceased. At the same time, she told the police that she herself was afraid of him.
It is known that the man was married and had a child. On social networks, he published photographs in which he posed with weapons. Investigators are checking to see if the images show the gun used in the killing.
What is known about his past in Albania
Greek media, citing Albanian sources, report that in 2016, a man was detained in Tirana on charges of sexual and domestic violence against his wife. Information also appeared about the materials of the case related to the persecution of the woman.
At the same time, there are no publicly available court documents yet to establish whether these accusations were proven and how the proceedings ended. Therefore, we are talking about information verified by the investigation, and not about a criminal record established by the court.
A search was carried out at the man’s house in Tavros. Police have seized electronic devices, documents and other items that may help reconstruct his actions and contacts before the crime.
Editor’s comment
It would be wrong to present what happened solely as a “crime of jealousy.” The available information does not indicate a sudden quarrel, but a possible sequence of deliberate actions: the man took an illegal weapon, drove to another area, left the car aside and waited for the woman to appear.
At the same time, it is necessary to separate confirmed facts from numerous leaks in the media. This especially applies to the woman’s complaint to the police in 2024, the man’s past accusations in Albania and certain details of the video recording.
If it is confirmed that the 48-year-old man was previously reported to law enforcement authorities that the 48-year-old man had been threatened or harassed, it will be necessary to establish how the risk was assessed and whether the woman was offered protection. The main question is not why she was unable to avoid the attack, but whether the dangerous actions of the person who did not make her decision to end the relationship were recognized in a timely manner.
The material was prepared based on reports from ERT, Kathimerini, Proto Thema, CNN Greece and other Greek media. The investigation is ongoing, so individual circumstances may be clarified.
