Greece detects first case of West Nile virus in 2026

Registered in Greece first case of West Nile virus infection in 2026. The most likely location of infection is Agia Paraskevi in Northern Athens.

As reported National Public Health Organization of Greece (ΕΟΔΥ)a patient over 60 years old fell ill meningoencephalitis. The first symptoms appeared at the end of June.

The suspected location of infection is the municipality of Agia Paraskevi, located in the regional unit of the Northern Sector of Athens. This does not mean that the virus is only circulating in a given area: ΕΟΔΥ emphasizes that it is impossible to accurately determine in advance the areas where new cases will appear.

How the virus is transmitted

West Nile virus spreads primarily through the bites of common mosquitoes, which are contracted by infected birds. The virus is not transmitted through direct household contact from person to person.

Most infected people have no symptoms or a mild illness. However, less than 1% infected severe damage to the nervous system develops, including encephalitis or meningitis.

The elderly, patients with weakened immune systems and chronic diseases are at greatest risk of severe disease. ECDC notes that there is no special vaccine or specific treatment for infection in humans yet.

What ΕΟΔΥ recommends

Residents of all regions of Greece are advised to use approved repellents, mosquito nets and clothing that cover the body, and turn on fans or air conditioners.

Particular attention should be paid to standing water in yards, gardens, balconies and roofs. Containers in which water accumulates must be emptied, covered or renewed with water at least once a week. You should also clean your gutters and gutters regularly.

ΕΟΔΥ reminds that West Nile virus infections have been reported in Greece every year since 2010, so the emergence of new cases in the summer and autumn periods is expected.

Editorial comment

One reported case does not mean the start of an epidemic, but it does confirm that the transmission season has already begun. Mosquito control remains the responsibility of local authorities, but much of their breeding grounds are in private yards and on balconies. A bucket of water left for a week can negate a considerable part of the municipal treatment – mosquitoes, unlike departments, work without approval.
