Inflation in Greece fell to 4.4%: meat, rent and energy continue to rise in price

In June, inflation in Greece slowed from 5.2% to 4.4%but remained noticeably higher than last year’s level. The pressure is maintained by housing, fuel, meat and catering.

According to data ΕΛΣΤΑΤin June 2025, annual inflation was 2.8%. Compared to May 2026, the overall price index has not changed, and its average increase over the past 12 months reached 3.3%.

The slowdown in inflation does not mean lower prices: most goods and services are still significantly more expensive than a year ago.

Housing, transport and catering

Prices in the housing category increased over the year by 10.6%transport – by 7.2%, and hotels, cafes and restaurants – by 7.7%. Rent increased in price by 7.1%, home repair services – by 5.3%, restaurants, cafes and snack bars – by 8.3%.

Among energy sources, prices for heating fuel increased the most – by 53.2%. Natural gas prices rose by 24.6%, gasoline by 12.8%, diesel fuel by 12%, and electricity by 2.8%. Air tickets became more expensive by 15.6%.

Meat continues to rise in price

Food and non-alcoholic drinks prices increased by an average of 2.7%. Lamb and goat meat increased in price by 16.2%beef – by 15.6%, meat products – by 5%, poultry – by 4.7%, coffee – by 4.3%.

At the same time, olive oil fell in price by 12.8%, rice by 6.9%, fresh and frozen fish by 2.4%.

Why did Eurostat show 3.9%

Eurostat’s preliminary estimate of 3.9% is consistent with the data ΕΛΣΤΑΤ. It refers to Harmonized Consumer Price Indexwhich is calculated according to uniform rules EU to compare states.

Final harmonized indicator ΕΛΣΤΑΤ also amounted to 3.9%. Thus, we are talking about two different indices: national – 4.4% and European harmonized – 3.9%.

Editorial comment

A decrease in inflation from 5.2% to 4.4% only means a slowdown in price growth, and not their return to their previous level. For the family budget, something else is more important: rent, meat, fuel, air tickets and eating out continue to rise in price much faster than the official average.
