Second major fire in two days
The fire in Omorphochori occurred just 24 hours after a large-scale fire and explosion at industrial site in Aspropyrgoswhere parts, scrap metal and a propane tanker were stored.
According to preliminary findings of the investigation, the incident in Aspropyrgos was associated with welding work near hazardous materials. There is no evidence of a connection between the two fires or the existence of a single criminal plan.
However, a new incident once again draws attention to the situation in the field of waste collection and recycling. In recent years, there have been dozens of fires at similar facilities in Greece, many of which were accompanied by toxic smoke, complete destruction of equipment and 112 warnings.
Particularly questionable is the fact that a major fire at a waste treatment plant has already occurred in the Omorphochori area in August 2024. It has not yet been confirmed whether the current fire is attributable to the same company, but a repeat incident in the same industrial area requires a thorough investigation.
