In Greece discussing the script again early parliamentary elections already September 27although officially the government continues to talk about spring 2027.
A new wave of talk about early elections appeared after a Live News / Mega report, which was retold by several Greek media outlets. According to these data, the government camp is increasingly considering the possibility of postponing the election campaign to early autumn, rather than waiting for February or March 2027.
The main date that currently appears in publications is September 27. In such a scenario, elections could be called after August 15 or towards the end of the month. That is, immediately after the summer break, when the country formally returns from vacation, and politics returns from the state of “everyone understands everything, but pretends that nothing is happening.”
Why September
Supporters of this scenario believe that an early date could give Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis several advantages.
First, a short campaign will limit the opposition’s preparation time. This concerns PASOK, possible political initiatives around Alexis Tsipras, Maria Caristianu’s Elpida project, as well as the potential party of former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.
Secondly, the September date leaves room for a second election procedure in about a month if the first does not produce a sustainable result. In conditions of fragmentation of the political field, this is no longer a technical detail, but one of the key calculations.
Thirdly, early elections would allow the authorities to get through the vote before the difficult winter period, when prices, taxes, energy costs and general dissatisfaction with the economic situation could have a greater impact on voter sentiment.
Official position: elections in 2027
At the same time, the official line of the government remains different. Kyriakos Mitsotakis reiterated in a recent interview that elections should be held in the spring of 2027, at the end of the government’s term.
The same position was previously voiced by government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis, emphasizing that the fall election scenarios have no official basis.
That is why current publications should be perceived not as an announcement of elections, but as political scenariowhich is being actively discussed in Athens. In Greek politics, this is a separate genre: at first everyone categorically denies everything, then they “rule out nothing,” and then suddenly it turns out that the calendar has been on the table for a long time.
What could push for early elections
One of the factors is preparation for the DEF in Thessaloniki. Typically, the Prime Minister uses the Thessaloniki International Exhibition for economic announcements and social measures. But if the elections are scheduled for the end of September, the DEF format may no longer just turn into a government speech, but into the actual start of a campaign.
Another factor is the state of the opposition. PASOK is trying to maintain its role as the main competitor of New Democracy, but at the same time the political field to the right and left of the ruling party is becoming more mobile.
Particular attention is paid to the possible activity of Antonis Samaras. For New Democracy, his independent political project would be sensitive primarily because it could work with the right-wing and conservative core of its electorate.
The figure of Alexis Tsipras is no less important. Any new political initiative around the former prime minister has the potential to change the balance in the center and the center-left field. Therefore, a short pre-election period is objectively more profitable for the authorities than a long campaign, during which new projects will have time to take organizational form.
Why March 2027 looks risky
Greek publications separately note that the option of elections at the beginning of 2027 may be less convenient for the government. The reason is simple: the winter period can increase social discontent.
If rising prices, household spending, taxes and income concerns return to the fore, the political cost of waiting until spring could be higher. Therefore, the “better earlier than after winter” scenario looks logical from the point of view of electoral tactics.
However, this option also has risks. Early elections themselves could be seen as an acknowledgment that the government wants to catch opponents off guard and avoid a more difficult period. For some voters, this may not look like a show of confidence, but rather an attempt at political maneuver.
What is known now
For now there is no official decision on the September 27 elections. This is a scenario that is actively circulating in Greek media and political circles.
If this option is indeed chosen, the key period will be the second half of August. It is then that clarity may emerge: whether the government will remain on the line of “elections in the spring of 2027” or the country will enter a short autumn campaign.
Editorial comment
The scenario for the September 27 elections looks politically clear: a short campaign, an unprepared opposition, the possibility of a second ballot box and an attempt to get to the polls before a difficult winter. But for now this is just a scenario, not a solution. For the government, the problem is that too active talk about early elections themselves becomes a factor of instability. When the authorities every day assure that there will be no elections, and the political market is already counting the dates, the voter begins to suspect that he is again being prepared for a surprise.
