Aspropyrgos: a worker walked out of a burning building with burns after an explosion

Shocking footage appeared after explosion in Aspropyrgos: The video shows a worker who suffered burns managed to get out of the building at the moment when the fire had already engulfed the room.

The video was filmed minutes after the explosion at a truck workshop in Aspropyrgos. The footage shows how a person gets out of a burning building, while the flames have already spread throughout the room. It was this moment that became the most difficult visual evidence of the accident: not smoke over the industrial zone, not fire trucks and not blocked roads, but a man who literally came out of the fire.

The man left the building when it was already burning

According to Greek media, the footage was taken shortly after the explosion. They show a worker leaving the building with burns as the fire continues around the building. This is not just another video from the scene of an emergency. This is the very moment that shows the real cost of an industrial accident: not in graphs, not in press releases, not in the words “the causes are being investigated,” but in the person who is trying to get out of the fire alive.

This is where the conversation about the incident should begin. Because behind technical formulations like “gas ignition”, “welding work” and “tank truck” there are specific people who came to work in the morning, and a few minutes later found themselves in a burning building.

This is where the conversation about the incident should begin. Because behind technical formulations like “gas ignition”, “welding work” and “tank truck” there are specific people who came to work in the morning, and a few minutes later found themselves in a burning building.

Previously, Athens News reported in detail about the fire and explosion itself in Aspropyrgos: 11 victims, message 112, a propane tank on the territory, a major fire operation and damage to neighboring properties. The background to the incident is published here: Aspropyrgos: fire and explosion at a metal processing plant, 11 injured.

Two victims are in critical condition

After the explosion and fire, 11 people were taken to hospitals. The most severe cases are now at CAT: two workers remain in critical condition with extensive burns.

One of them, a 41-year-old man, suffered burns of approximately 75% bodyas well as inhalation damage to the respiratory tract. He underwent surgery and is in the intensive care unit under constant medical supervision.

The second seriously injured person, a 54-year-old man, suffered burns of approximately 90% body and also remains intubated in the CAT. This is no longer just “injuries after a fire,” but a condition in which doctors are literally fighting for people’s lives by the hour.

Two victims with minor burns continue to be treated at the Θριάσιο hospital. In Αττικόν one more person remains for observation due to breathing problems after inhaling smoke.

Preview: Gas in a tanker truck

Initial assessments by authorities indicate that the explosion may have been caused by the ignition of gas in a tanker truck that was located on the premises of a truck workshop during welding work.

If this version is confirmed, the investigation will have to answer several direct questions: whether the tank was degassed, who authorized the work, whether safety rules were followed, whether there were flammable materials nearby and why the workers ended up in an area where one explosion could lead to such consequences.

An industrial accident of this magnitude rarely comes out of nowhere. Usually behind it there is a chain of decisions: “we’ll do it quickly,” “no big deal,” “this has happened before,” “we’ll make it,” “it’ll blow by.” Then it doesn’t carry through. Then people come out of the fire with burns, and officials and owners begin to explain that “the reasons are being clarified.”

Two detained

Detained in the case workshop owner And Responsible for tanker operation. Their exact role must be established during the preliminary investigation.

The investigation is looking into the conditions under which the work was carried out, who was responsible for safety at the site, what materials were on site and whether the necessary measures were taken before welding began. Of particular importance will be the question of whether workers were warned about the risk and whether there was a real evacuation plan at the site.

Arrests in themselves do not mean proven guilt. But they show that authorities are no longer treating the incident as an accidental fire, but as an accident where there could be specific responsibility for specific individuals.

Why it’s not just “another fire”

The video of the worker emerging from the burning building makes this story especially difficult. It shows what is usually hidden behind dry numbers: behind every “11 victims” there is a person who, at some point, was left alone with fire, smoke and pain.

That is why the main question now is not only what exactly exploded. The main question is why the security system did not prevent a situation in which people were close to such a source of risk.

Aspropyrgos and the wider Western Attica area have long been considered one of the region’s most challenging industrial areas: workshops, warehouses, scrap sites, metal recycling, tank trucks, flammable materials and residential areas are too often close by. When controls are weak, such areas become a map of potential accidents. You just need to wait for the spark. Which, as it turns out, humanity knows how to do with alarming regularity.

What should the investigation find out?

The investigation must establish the exact sequence of events: what work was carried out before the explosion, where the tanker was located, whether there were gas residues in it, who was responsible for its condition, whether welding work was carried out in compliance with regulations and why the fire spread so quickly.

It is also necessary to check whether the site had fire suppression equipment, fire corridors, protective equipment for workers and instructions in case of an accident. If all this existed only on paper, then we are not talking about an accident, but about a habitual imitation of security.

Particular attention should be paid to working conditions. When two people receive burns to 75% and 90% of the body, and several more victims end up in hospitals, the question is no longer only for the owner of the facility, but also for the inspection system. Who controlled the workshop? When was the last inspection? What violations were recorded? Why were dangerous jobs carried out in such conditions?

Main conclusion

New footage from Aspropyrgos changes the perception of the entire accident: this is no longer just an industrial fire with numbers in the report, but a story about a man who, with burns, managed to get out of a building already engulfed in fire.

Behind this video there are 11 victims, two workers in critical condition, a preliminary version of the ignition of gas in a tanker during welding work and the detention of two responsible persons.

Now it is important that the investigation does not dissolve into the standard formula “the reasons are being clarified.” It is necessary to establish who allowed work near a dangerous container, who was responsible for safety, whether the rules were violated and why people found themselves in a situation where an ordinary working day turned into a struggle for life.

Because if after such a video the conversation is again reduced to technical information and a couple of formal checks, the next explosion in an industrial zone will not be a tragic surprise, but a continuation of the same system. Just with a different address and different people on fire.
