A Greek F-16 fighter jet made an emergency landing at Zakynthos airport after a technical fault. The pilot survived, and his actions in the Greek Air Force are assessed as exemplary.
The incident occurred on July 9. The Hellenic Air Force fighter jet had taken off from Araxos Air Base, home to the 116th Combat Wing, and was participating in a training exercise when it developed a malfunction. After this, the pilot directed the plane to the nearest suitable airfield – Zakynthos Airport.
According to ERTThe F-16 landed without its landing gear extended and slid along the runway for several meters. The friction started a fire, which was quickly extinguished by airport fire services.
The pilot dumped fuel and landed the plane
According to Protothemathe pilot acted according to protocol: first he emptied the fuel tanks, then he landed the plane without using the landing gear. The Greek Air Force considers his reaction impeccable.
This is exactly the case when the phrase “kept my cool” is not a newspaper decoration. The pilot had a faulty car, limited time, a civilian airport, the risk of fire and the need to avoid turning an island tourist day into a plane crash. In such situations, instructions are read not for beauty, but to stay alive.
The pilot was evacuated from the scene and, according to Greek media, has already been transported by military helicopter to the Andravida base for preventive medical examinations. His condition is assessed as good.
Dendias intends to meet with the pilot
According to Greek media reports, National Defense Minister Nikos Dendias is due to meet with the pilot in the coming days to personally congratulate him for his actions during the emergency.
This reaction is understandable: the pilot not only saved his life, but, judging by the first data, managed to save the plane from complete destruction. For the Air Force, this is important both symbolically and materially. The F-16 is not a moped at the supermarket; its loss costs the state too much, even if the state pretends that defense money grows on olive trees.
Zakynthos airport is temporarily closed
After the emergency landing, the Zakynthos airport runway was temporarily closed. According to Zouglathe airport had to remain closed until at least 19:00, causing flight delays and cancellations and serious inconvenience for hundreds of tourists.
A special Greek Air Force team was sent to the island to remove the fuselage from the runway and clean the airfield. The next official information about the restoration of airport operations was expected after 19:00.
For tourists, this, of course, became an unpleasant continuation of the summer program: first the heat, then flight delays, and now a military fighter on the runway. A Greek holiday can be intense, sometimes even overwhelming.
What remains to be discovered
The reasons for the technical failure have not yet been announced. They must be verified by the Greek Air Force. In such cases, the condition of the aircraft, the actions of the crew, data from on-board systems, maintenance, the nature of the failure and the sequence of events before landing are studied.
The condition of the runway after the plane skidded and caught fire will be assessed separately. This is critical for Zakynthos Airport: at the height of the tourist season, any prolonged closure of the runway quickly turns into a chain of delays, cancellations, flight diversions and irritated passengers.
Main conclusion
The emergency landing of an F-16 on Zakynthos ended without casualties thanks to the actions of the pilot. He dumped fuel, landed the malfunctioning fighter without landing gear, and was able to avoid the worst-case scenario.
Now the main questions are the reason for the failure, the condition of the aircraft and the speed of restoration of the airport. But it is already obvious: the pilot did his part of the job exactly as expected of him at a critical moment. The car was on fire on the runway, the airport was at a standstill, the tourists were nervous, and the man in the cockpit did the most important thing – he landed the fighter and came out alive.
