High gold prices pushed the owners gold sovereignswhich in Greece are usually called “golden lire”for the sale of coins. Over the course of six months, the Bank of Greece bought almost 14 thousand coins.
According to the Bank of Greece, in January–March 2026, citizens sold to the central bank 7,178 gold sovereigns, while bought only 1,381 coins. In the second quarter, the trend continued: 6,772 sales versus 714 purchases.
Thus, in the first half of the year, the Bank of Greece bought from the population 13,950 gold sovereignsbut sold only 2,095. Sales were more than six times higher than purchases. These figures are given by O.T. with reference to data from Τράπεζα της Ελλάδος.
When a “safe haven” turns into a cash register
The gold sovereign in Greece has long been a common way of storing savings. Such coins are often found not in investment portfolios, but at home: in family boxes, old safes and envelopes left over from parents or grandparents.
But the rise in the price of gold changes the logic of the owners. When a coin bought many years ago for much less costs hundreds of euros, some people prefer not to wait for a new record, but to turn the metal into cash.
According to a Bank of Greece bulletin published in early July, the central bank was buying gold sovereigns at €829.06 and selling at €971.34. The price changes daily following world gold quotes and exchange rates, so before making a transaction it is worth checking it in the current bulletin. Find Bank of Greece daily prices.
The difference between the purchase and sale prices of the Bank of Greece is also noticeable. A person who sells a coin to a bank today receives significantly less than he would have paid to buy it. Therefore, the gold sovereign remains a long-term store of value rather than a tool for quick speculation.
Why are the number of sales growing?
The strong rise in gold prices is associated with international uncertainty, geopolitical conflicts, fluctuations in currency markets and the desire of investors to move into traditional defensive assets.
For a private owner, this creates an understandable temptation: if a gold sovereign is worth significantly more than a few years ago, you can sell it and pay off debts, pay for repairs, cover housing costs, or simply save money in a bank account.
In this sense, the current wave of sales does not necessarily mean that people have stopped believing in gold. Rather, some owners decided to take advantage of the moment. “Safe Haven” is good as long as you are willing to sit in it for a long time. But at a price of about a thousand euros per coin, many still want to check what the coast looks like.
Sales have been growing for several years now
This is not the first time that the trend towards active sales of gold sovereigns has been noticeable in Greece. In 2025, the Bank of Greece bought 40,031 coins from the population, while it sold 7,563. Such data was published by in.gr.
This shows that the market for gold sovereigns in Greece is now working mainly in one direction: people are carrying old savings for sale, and there are noticeably fewer people willing to buy new coins at a record price.
What is important to know before selling
The Bank of Greece handles English gold sovereigns through its central branch in Athens, branches in Thessaloniki and Heraklion, and a branch in Patras. In most cases, an appointment by telephone is required. Rules for the purchase and sale of gold sovereigns by the Bank of Greece.
Before the transaction, you should check the authenticity and condition of the coin. The price depends not only on gold prices, but also on whether the sovereign meets the bank’s requirements for weight, fineness and safety.
Main conclusion: The first half of 2026 became a period of massive profit-taking. The Greeks did not rush to buy gold at the peak, but, on the contrary, began to take gold sovereigns out of their household reserves and sell them at a high price.
And this is perhaps the most honest indicator of sentiment: when gold rises in price too quickly, even a staunch supporter of “eternal value” suddenly remembers that the coin also has a very specific price in euros.
