Russia launched a massive attack on Kyiv: 68 missiles and 351 drones, there were dead and destroyed houses

On the night of July 6, Kyiv was again subjected to a massive Russian missile and drone strike. According to the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Russia used 68 missiles of various types and 351 drones, the main direction of attack was the Ukrainian capital.

At the time of publication according to Reutersat least 11 dead and 46 injured were reported, but the numbers may change as the rubble is cleared.

The Ukrainian military said it was able to shoot down or suppress 37 missiles and 326 drones. However, ballistic and hypersonic targets turned out to be the most difficult part of the strike: according to Western agencies, some of these missiles were not intercepted. It was the lack of interceptor missiles for Patriot that Vladimir Zelensky called one of the reasons for the severe consequences of the night attack.

Residential buildings, fires and people under the rubble

The most serious destruction was recorded in the Podolsk and Darnitsky districts of Kyiv. In the Podolsk region, a rocket or its fragments hit a nine-story residential building, where a fire started and a partial collapse occurred. Rescuers continued to search for people under the rubble.

A 21-story and a 25-story residential building were also damaged. In one of the high-rise buildings, people were trapped on the upper floors; rescuers evacuated 22 residents. According to Associated Press and about fires in apartments, warehouses and non-residential buildings.

Kyiv authorities declared July 7 a day of mourning. This is the second heavy blow to the capital in less than a week: the previous attack on the night of July 2 was one of the deadliest for Kyiv in 2026. Reuters

Zircons, Iskanders and conflicting statements

Russian and Ukrainian sources report the use of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and attack drones. A number of publications claim that Zircon hypersonic missiles were used for the first time in Kyiv. However, at the time of publication, there is no independent confirmation of this particular type of missile from international observers.

Therefore, the wording “Zircons destroyed strategic objects” still remains a statement by the Russian side, and not an established fact. In war conditions, the types of ammunition, targets and results of strikes often become part of the information warfare even before the examination is completed.

Moscow declares military goals

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the targets of the massive strike were enterprises of the Ukrainian military-industrial complex, facilities of the fuel and energy complex in Kyiv and the region, as well as military airfields in the Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava, Cherkassy, Chernigov and Kyiv regions.

Ukrainian authorities have not confirmed the defeat of all listed targets. But the destruction of residential areas and the death of civilians have been confirmed. This is precisely the usual logic of the current war: one side reports about “military-industrial complex objects”, the other counts the dead, dismantles the concrete and pulls people out of the entrances. And between these two versions there remains a city that again found itself at the epicenter of the attack.

Vishneve: evacuation and threat of detonation

In the city of Vishnevoye, Kyiv region, after a night strike, some residents began to evacuate due to the risk of detonation of explosive objects. Local authorities reported damage to dozens of buildings, fires and heavy smoke. Traffic in certain areas was limited, including the railway infrastructure.

The Ukrainian side states that the Russian attack was aimed primarily at Kyiv. Russia, in turn, calls the strike a retaliatory operation against military and energy facilities in Ukraine. It is impossible to independently verify all statements by the parties during the ongoing war.

The main fact of this night does not require complex military terminology: Kyiv was again attacked by hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, people died in the city, residential buildings were destroyed, and rescuers continued to work among the rubble. Everything else – the type of missiles, the list of targets and the declared “results” – will still be the subject of checks, examinations and mutual information campaigns.
