In the heat, the desire to immediately dive into the sea, river or lake is especially strong. But sudden immersion in cold water may cause cold shock: a person suddenly begins to breathe heavily and quickly, loses control of movements and risks choking before he even has time to understand what happened.
Why is cold water dangerous after the heat?
Summer heat alone does not make water safe. The sea, deep bays, rivers and lakes heat up much more slowly than the air. Particularly cold water may be near rocks, near underwater springs, in places with current, at depth, or near the mouth of a river.
According to the Royal National Water Rescue Society in the UK, water that can seriously affect a person’s breathing and movement is water at a temperature below 15°C. Danger arises primarily in the first seconds after an unexpected dive. [RNLI)
[RNLI: Open-water swimming safety]
Where in Greece can the water be unexpectedly cold?
In Greece, this risk is not limited to mountain rivers or lakes. Even at popular beaches, the water can be noticeably colder near rocky shores, in deep bays, near underwater springs, near river mouths and in areas with currents.
Particular caution should be exercised on islands and along steep shores, where the depth begins almost immediately from the shore. In such places, a spectacular jump into the water may turn out to be much less romantic than it looked in the video.
Heat exhaustion and heatstroke: the main threat of heat
During extreme heat, the main danger remains heat exhaustion And heatstroke. The Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection recommends avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, heavy physical work, long walking and running during the hottest hours, and more often staying in the shade and cool rooms. Heat exhaustion can include extreme thirst, weakness, headache, dizziness, nausea, profuse sweating and rapid heartbeat.
Heatstroke is more dangerous: confusion, speech impairment, loss of consciousness, convulsions, very high body temperature, hot dry skin or, conversely, profuse sweating are considered warning signs. [CDC: Heat-related illnesses]
When to call 112
You need to call the number immediately 112if, after being exposed to heat or swimming, a person experiences loss of consciousness, seizures, confusion of speech or consciousness, severe shortness of breath, chest pain, inability to stand or move, or signs of severe overheating.
Before help arrives, the victim should be moved to the shade or a cool place, loosen tight clothing, cool the body with wet towels or water, and not leave alone. If you lose consciousness, you should not try to give the person water to drink.
The main rule
Do not jump into the water immediately after the sun is shining. A few minutes in the shade, drinking water and a gradual entry into the sea will not ruin your vacation, but can prevent a dangerous situation. In the heat, the sea should cool, and not become an additional test for the body.
Cold water is dangerous not only in the sea
Sharp cooling of the body in the heat is associated not only with swimming. A separate risk may also arise when drinking very cold water or drinks immediately after prolonged exposure to the sun.
Ice water can cause spasms in the throat, esophagus or stomach, increase the discomfort of a sore throat and cause pain in people with increased sensitivity of the gastrointestinal tract. Those who suffer from gastritis, reflux, chronic throat or heart diseases should be especially careful.
In the next article we will take a closer look at whether it is possible to drink ice water in the heat, who it can really harm, and how to cool down safer during the day.
