On the road to Chania airport, the driver of a fuel tanker staged a dangerous overtaking, having previously “hurried” the car in front with headlights and a horn. The video shows how a heavy car is overtaking through a double solid line in an area with heavy traffic, and the driver of a passenger car is forced to move to avoid a collision.
The recording was published by a local portal ZarpaNews; it was also distributed Newsit, SKAI and other Greek media.
The incident occurred on the road leading to Chania airport, where traffic is especially dense at the height of the tourist season. In the published footage, the fuel tanker first flashes its high beams, asking the vehicle in front to move to the right. When this doesn’t work, the driver starts honking his horn and then moves into the oncoming lane.
Overtaking occurs where it is prohibited by double continuous markings. At this moment, other cars are moving towards you. The driver of the car, which the fuel truck has begun to bypass, has to step aside to allow the heavy vehicle to complete the maneuver.
Not just rudeness, but the risk of a serious accident
In the case of a fuel tanker, the danger is especially obvious. This is not a passenger car that you can try to stop a few meters away. The weight, braking distance and possible nature of the load turn any mistake into a scenario with consequences far more serious than an ordinary traffic conflict.
Greek media describe the episode as extremely dangerous and potentially fatal. According to in.grthe recording shows events from both the rear and front of the vehicle, making it clear how close the situation came to a head-on collision.
The road to the airport and the old problem of Crete
The road to Chania airport has long been considered one of the tensest areas in western Crete. In the summer there is a mix of tourist cars, taxis, buses, freight transport and local drivers who are in a hurry as if the plane is leaving without them.
But this is not a matter of “local temperament” and not a reason to romanticize dangerous driving. Pushing with headlights, a horn and trying to push another car out of its path on a road with limited visibility is not a sign of confidence, but a direct threat to life.
It is not yet known whether police have identified the driver or whether formal proceedings have been launched. However, the video recording has already become the subject of harsh reactions on social networks and local media.
The driver of the fuel tanker, judging by the footage, wanted to gain a few seconds. The rest of the movement had to risk their lives to get it. There are already enough dangerous areas on the roads of Crete. Adding to them a heavy car flying through a double solid road is no longer recklessness, but an almost ready-made protocol for a future tragedy.
