In the video, both animals are on the same wooden table and do not show noticeable aggression. The eagle does not try to attack the fox, and the fox is in no hurry to leave the area. It was this calmness that made the footage so unusual: usually the meeting of two wild predators is perceived as a potential conflict, and not as a random pause in the same place.
Dutch Harbor and Unalaska: a place where eagles are everywhere
Frames are associated with Dutch Harborlocated on the island Unalaska in the Aleutian ridge. The area is indeed known for its unusually high number of bald eagles, with the birds regularly seen near the port, roads, residences, fish processing facilities, and coastal areas.
The City of Unalaska explicitly notes that visitors are often amazed at the number of bald eagles that can be seen throughout almost the entire community. Municipal website of Unalaska calls bald eagles one of the most visible parts of local wildlife.
The bald eagle is Alaska’s largest resident bird of prey, with a wingspan that can reach 2.3 metersand the mass is approximately from 3.6 to 6.4 kg. Alaska has more sea eagles than any other state in the United States. Data from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
Why could an eagle and a fox be close together?
The calm proximity of animals does not mean that there is friendship or unusual affection between them. Most likely, both the eagle and the fox were attracted same food source or a convenient point from which you can inspect the territory.
Bald eagles feed primarily on fish, but also use other available food sources: carrion, prey remains, small animals and food scraps. Red foxes are also omnivores and often explore areas near houses, ports, containers and tourist sites.
In the area Dutch Harbor this is especially likely: a large fishing port and fish processing infrastructure creates many accessible food sources. Therefore, eagles can appear here even in places that look completely “urban” to tourists.
A peaceful scene doesn’t mean the animals are safe
Although everything looks calm in the video, The bald eagle remains a large predator with powerful claws and beak. The red fox can also change behavior dramatically, especially if there is food nearby, cubs, or a person trying to get too close.
In Unalaska, eagles are so often found near people that local authorities regularly remind people not to feed the birds or approach them. In 2017, local radio station KUCB even named Unalaska one of the most famous places in the United States for cases attacks eagles on people, especially near the post office and areas where the birds are accustomed to foraging for food. Therefore, you should not try to repeat what you saw for the sake of a photo or video. Wildlife usually looks friendly until that second when a person decides that he can become the third participant in the “sweet conversation” on the picnic table…
