North Euboea shakes again: schools are closed

North Euboea after a series of earthquakes that began on Sunday, June 7, continues to shake. There were no casualties, but schools in the area Mandudi closed for inspections.

Euboea Island continues to live in seismic anticipation mode after a series of tremors that began on Sunday, June 7in the area Dig up and were noticeable even in Attica. The strongest shock was estimated at approximately 5.2–5.3 pointsfollowed by a series of aftershocks.

According to Geodynamic Institutethe first noticeable seismic wave occurred around 12:58 on Sunday, with the epicenter at approximately 6 kilometers from Dig up. More tremors followed, including a stronger earthquake near 5.2 points. Due to the shallow depth of the source, tremors were felt not only by the residents of Euboea, but also by many areas Athens.

preview

Monday morning June 8the area shook again: a new seismic vibration was recorded near 4.3 points. According to preliminary data, no casualties or new serious damage were registered. However, in the municipality Mandudi – Limni – Agia Anna decided not to play heroism and closed primary schools, as well as the gymnasium Dig upto check the buildings.

What seismologists say

Professor of Seismology Kostas Papadzachos urged people not to panic. According to him, this area often gives shocks of this magnitude, and the sequence itself does not yet look like anything unusual. “We need to wait a little, because it is not yet completely clear where exactly the epicenters are. The duration of earthquakes is short, a few seconds.”he noted.

Director of Research Geodynamic Institute Athanasios Ganas also stated that there is no historical record of earthquakes in the area above 6 points. According to him, we are talking about a famous fault behind the mountain Kandiliwhich usually gives shocks in the range 5–5.5 points. At the same time, he emphasized that the old houses in the area Dig up needs to be checked.

Chapter OASP Efthimios Lekkas reported that the area has high seismicity, but such sequences usually develop over a period of hours or days and do not progress to significantly higher magnitudes. “Do not go near dangerous terrain and do not stay in old or damaged houses.”he warned.

Damage and measures

According to local authorities, no serious injuries were reported, but in the area Mandudi Rockfalls, rock avulsions and localized damage were noted. After the tremors, videos from surveillance cameras appeared on social networks: one of them shows people running out of the room in panic while the camera shakes for several seconds. Seismology, as usual, quickly reminds a person that concrete is not a philosophical category, but a material with a tensile strength.

Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection arrived in North Euboea Evangelos Tournas together with the Secretary General for Disaster Reconstruction Petros Kambouris. Fire services of Euboea and Attica, as well as units 1st And 7th EMAK placed on high alert. There are patrols on roads and populated areas to record possible damage.

The main thing is now

Seismologists continue to monitor aftershocks, and authorities urge residents to remain calm and follow instructions Civil Defense. The main line is simple: there is no panic, but checks are needed. This is especially true for old houses, schools and areas with a risk of rockfalls.

For Euboea, this is not exotic, but an unpleasant but familiar reality. And yet, each such episode again shows the old Greek problem: the country lives in a seismic zone, but remembers the vulnerability of buildings, usually after the earth itself has already reminded.
