Patras: seventh death in prison in as many weeks

In Agios Stefanos prison V Patrach Another death of a prisoner was recorded. According to Greek media, this is already seventh death in a correctional facility over the past few weeks.

The cause of the man’s death is being investigated by the competent authorities.

According to Pronewsa new incident occurred on Thursday, June 4. The circumstances under which the prisoner died have not yet been officially disclosed.

Publications Proto Theme, in.gr And Newsit also indicate that the total number of deaths in prison Agios Stefanos reached seven in a short period. Such statistics no longer look like a collection of random tragedies. This is an alarming signal about the state of the institution, medical control and the general prisoner detention system.

Questions regarding conditions of detention

According to Greek media, previous deaths have already prompted the intervention of local structures, which have demanded explanations about the work of medical services and the staffing of the prison with medical personnel. Now, after a new case, these questions become even more severe.

If seven people die in one correctional facility in a few weeks, the public has the right to demand not general phrases, but specific answers: who these people were, what their diagnoses were, whether medical care was provided, how many doctors work in the prison, how quickly the staff responded and why the series of deaths was not stopped earlier.

Formally, each death is investigated separately. All cases, according to the established protocol, are transferred to Western Achaia Security Department. According to Greek media reports, plans have already been drawn up seven dossiershowever, no significant progress in the investigation has yet been reported. Seven dossiers without clear answers are not justice, but bureaucratic cemetery accounting.

Prison should not be a zone of silence

Prison is a place of deprivation of liberty, and not a place of deprivation of the right to life and medical care. The state can punish a person with imprisonment, but it has no right to turn his health and safety into a side expense of the system.

That is why the situation in Agios Stefanos requires not only police checks after each death, but also full control from Ministry of Justicethe prosecutor’s office, medical services and independent observers. If the problem is related to a shortage of doctors, conditions of detention, delays in providing care or chronic indifference of the administration, this should be stated directly.

For now, the picture looks dangerously simple: prisoners are dying, cases are being opened, and no answers are forthcoming. And the longer the authorities limit themselves to procedural phrases, the stronger the impression that the prison system is again hiding its failures behind walls where society usually looks too late.
