Maria Caristianu sharply responded to accusations of a “Russian trace” and stated that her political position is built around the interests of Greece.

Maria Caristianu performed in the program “Αποκαλύψεις”where she responded to accusations from the outside Nikos Karahalios. Previously, he claimed that the creation of her party was allegedly connected with instructions from Moscow. Based on these statements, Karystianu has already filed a lawsuit.
Karystiana stated that she met with Karahalios two or three times, and the first meeting, according to her, was unexpected. She emphasized that she did not know in advance about his presence and that they were introduced by a mutual friend.
“I didn’t know he would come to the meeting”“, she said, commenting on the nature of the contacts.
“If there are accusations, show evidence”
Caristianu named the accusations against her “very heavy” and demanded that Karahalios presented evidence of his words. According to her, hints of foreign influence cannot replace facts.
Against this background, she gave an example that has already caused a separate discussion in the Greek media. Karistianu said: “I saw politicians who came out wearing a Jewish kippah. Does this mean anything? – and immediately added: “I didn’t take pictures next to the Russian flag”.
This phrase requires precise presentation. Caristianu did not claim that she herself bale proves political dependence. On the contrary, she used this example as an argument against the logic of innuendo: if one external symbol or contact does not prove dependence, then accusations of “Russian trace” must be supported by facts, not political rhetoric.
Otherwise, Greek politics is finally turning into a symbol recognition competition: who stood with whom, next to what flag, who knew whom, who came where without warning. Convenient genre: no evidence is needed, just a suspicious photograph and the right intonation.
Response to the “Russian trace”
The accusations against Caristianu come amid the formation of her political movement and the growth of her influence after the tragedy in Tempi. As I wrote Efsyn, Nikos Karahalios claimed that Caristianu allegedly received instructions from Moscow speed up the creation of the party. These statements were part of a wider campaign around her political project.
Karystiana denies these allegations. She states that she is not involved in such scenarios and that her political position is not built around external centers of influence, but around the Greek national interest.
“Greece – with Greece”“, she emphasized, adding that for her the main guideline remains what she calls Greek law and the interests of the country.
In a political sense, this is an attempt to take a position outside the usual scheme: not “pro-Russian”Not “pro-American”Not “pro-Israel”but nationally oriented. Sounds nice. But in Greek politics, where every new political project must receive approval from the US Embassy, such a position inevitably invites attacks.
Karystiano wants debate with Mitsotakis
Separately, Caristianu said she would like a political discussion with the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. According to her, she has many questions for the head of government.
“I want to ask him a lot of things, including how much Maximos costs each month.”she said, referring to government spending.
This phrase shows well where Caristianu is trying to hit politically: not only on the topic Tempibut also in the image of power as a closed, expensive and detached structure from society. Its electoral strength is built precisely on a moral accusation: the authorities did not give justice, did not provide answers, and now demand that society simply move on.
The problem for the government is that Caristianu does not speak the language of the usual party opposition. She speaks on behalf of pain, mistrust and feelings of injustice. It’s more difficult to counter this with a standard set of press releases, ratings and words about stability.
New stress point
The story of the kippah statement and accusations of Russian influence shows how nervous the political scene around Carystianu has become. Any phrase she says now instantly turns into a reason for an attack, and any attack becomes proof that the political system perceives her as a real threat.
This is what makes the situation important. Karistianu is no longer just a public figure after the tragedy in Tempi. It becomes a political factor around which lines of conflict begin to line up: the government, old political strategists, accusations of foreign influence, the struggle for the protest electorate and an attempt to discredit the new project in advance.
The question now is whether she can withstand the pressure and move from moral protest to a full-fledged political program. Because it’s one thing to be a symbol of justice. Another is to become the leader of a party where every word will be examined under a microscope, and every acquaintance will suddenly turn out to be someone’s agent. Greek politics loves such performances, especially when they themselves sell tickets.
Editorial comment
Words Maria Karistianu are important not because of the kippah phrase itself, but because of the logic it attempts to expose. In Greek politics, the old mechanism has been turned on again: if an inconvenient person rises in the ratings, he must be urgently connected with an external center of power – Moscow, Washington, Brussels, whoever. The main thing is not to discuss why they began to believe this person in the first place.
Karystiana is dangerous for the system not because Russia is supposedly behind her. It is dangerous because behind it lies the social trauma after Tempi and distrust of the authorities. And if her opponents want to prove the opposite, they need facts, not political hints. Otherwise, this will not be an expose, but another attempt to drown an inconvenient voice in the usual Greek mixture of rumors, labels and television noise.
